COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Taylor Mikesell scored 19 points and No. 9 Maryland dominated neighboring rival George Washington from the outset in an 88-54 rout Wednesday night at the XFINITY Center.
Â
Shakira Austin had 15 points and eight rebounds for the Terrapins (4-1), who built a 16-point lead in the first quarter and cruised to the finish.
Â
In this one, Mikesell went 7 for 11 from the field and sank five 3-pointers.
Â
With a starting lineup that includes two freshmen and a pair of sophomores, the rebuilding Colonials (2-3) were ill-equipped to handle an experienced Maryland team that returned all five starters from a squad that went 29-5 last season.
Â
Maryland forced George Washington to commit 10 turnovers in the first quarter, make only two baskets, trailing 23-7 after the first quarter.
"I thought it was nice to see us pick up where we left off Sunday with our aggressiveness on both ends of the floor," head coach
Brenda Frese said. "I liked how we set the tone early, especially with our defense. On defense, we caused about 10 turnovers in that first quarter. I thought we were really locked in. I thought GW is always a really well-coached team. I thought we kind of withstood that run in the second quarter. I think they fought extremely hard but I like that we're sharing the basketball, doing some great things defensively and being able to get on the glass. It's a really good thing today with the ball."
Â
Two straight 3-pointers by Tori Hyduke got the Colonials to 33-21, but Maryland answered with an 11-0 run that featured 3-pointers by Mikesell and Faith Masonius, along with a three-point play by Ashley Owusu.
Â
The Terps led 46-24 at halftime and owned a 29-point cushion entering the fourth quarter.
Â
Hyduke played 34 minutes and led GW with 12 points, all of them on shots from beyond the arc.
Â
The Terps recorded their third game on the season where all eligible players scored in the contest. Kaila Charles scored 11 points and grabbed four boards, while Owusu scored eight points, dished out nine assists and grabbed seven rebounds. Diamond Miller had a perfect night from the field scoring 10 points on 4-4 shooting from the field, two of those from beyond the arc.Â
Â
Stephanie Jones, who was recognized for reaching the 500th career-rebound mark before the game, contributed 12 points and four rebounds to the win. Jones needs just seven points to reach the 1,000 point milestone in her career.
Â
Blair Watson scored six points, while Masonius scored five points and grabbed five boards.
Â
Maryland has won three straight since falling at home to South Carolina, now the fifth-ranked team in the nation. Mikesell, a sophomore guard, went scoreless against the Gamecocks but has totaled 52 points during the Terrapins' three-game streak.
Â
Owusu was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week Monday for her first career weekly honor. She averaged 13.0 points, 4.5 assists and 3.5 rebounds in the Terps' two wins last week. She shot over 56 percent (9-for-16) from the field and 50 percent (3-for-6) from outside the arc.Â
Â
