DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Kaila Charles scored a season-high 20 points and
Ashley Owusu posted career highs of 18 points and 10 rebounds as ninth-ranked Maryland routed Belmont 90-26 Saturday in the Daytona Beach Invitational.
Charles was 9 of 14 from the field in 20 minutes of action. Owusu, a freshman, thrived in transition to post her first career double-double.
Diamond Miller added 12 points,
Stephanie Jones scored 11 and
Faith Masonius grabbed 11 rebounds. The Terrapins outscored the Bruins 42-0 during a 14-minute stretch of the second half and held them to just nine total points in the third and fourth quarters. Maryland (7-1) has won six straight games.
"I thought it was a really dominating effort for our defense for us to be able to hold a really good team like Belmont to 26 points, head coach
Brenda Frese said. "It was a 40-minute game. We shared the basketball. We did it all on both ends between our defense, our rebounding and playing off of each other."
Cam Browning led the Bruins (3-4) with six points. Belmont's 26 points were the fewest allowed by the Terrapins since they held Wagner to 24 points in 2014.
Maryland's defense set the tone early, as Belmont missed its first seven field-goal attempts and was just 1 of 15 from the field as the Terps took a 12-3 lead after the first quarter. It was 37-17 at halftime.
Maryland was 11 of 17 from the field in the third quarter and outscored Belmont 28-3. The Bruins' scoreless drought continued until Browning made a layup with 4:40 remaining.
Ellie Harmeyer, the Bruins' leading scorer, left the game after taking an elbow to the face midway in the second quarter.
This was Maryland's first-ever matchup with Belmont.
Next, the Terrapins will travel to Raleigh, N.C. later in the week to take on No. 14 NC State (6-0) Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. The Terps-Wolfpack matchup will be televised on ESPN.
The Terps are ranked No. 9 in the AP poll and No. 10 in the USA Today Coaches poll.
