Six Terps Earn All-Big Ten Honors

ROSEMONT, Ill. – Six Maryland soccer student athletes earned All-Big Ten honors, the conference announced Friday.

Maryland placed two players on the first team with seniors Eli Crognale and Johannes Bergmann both earning that honor. Junior Eric Matzelevich and freshman Niklas Neumann were named to the second team while Nick Richardson and Malcolm Johnston were both named to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team.

Crognale, a midfielder, leads the Terps with five assists and has also chipped in three goals. A captain, the Gahanna, Ohio has notched a goal or assist in the Terps' last five matches. Crognale's brother Alex was an All-Big Ten First Team selection in 2016 as a defender.

Bergmann has emerged as one of the top center backs in the nation this season and has helped the Terps notch nine clean sheets. The Erfurt, Germany native has also notched two goals and two assists, including an overtime winner against then No. 24 Yale on Oct. 21.

Matzelevich leads Maryland in goals with five and has recorded an assist this season. The junior captain also leads the Terps win shots with 42. Neumann has been stellar between the sticks for the Terps with a 0.88 goals against average and .786 save percentage.

Johnston has emerged as an attacking force for the Terps in his debut campaign, notching three goals and four assist. The freshman has been incredibly efficient, scoring his three goals on his four shots on goal.

Richardson, a redshirt freshman, was one of the top defensive midfielders in the Big Ten this season. The Baltimore native impressed with his incredible work rate and anchored Maryland's midfield from his deep lying position. Richardson also earned Big Ten Sportsmanship Award honors.

Maryland returns to action Sunday afternoon in the Big Ten Quarterfinals at Northwestern. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m., and fans can watch the action live on BTN Plus.
