COLLEGE PARK, Md. — The University of Maryland track and field and cross country programs are home to a range of outstanding performances, memories and success stories. Olympic record holder Renaldo Nehemiah (1979) and school record holders Thea LaFond (2015) and Chioma Onyekwere (2016) are a few to name.
With 21 newcomers this season, many of the first year Terps are searching to create a legacy for themselves on and off of the track.
Men:
Freshman Caleb Dean (sprints) is no stranger to the College Park area. Dean graduated from DeMatha Catholic High School, just five minutes down Baltimore Ave. He's the current Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC) 300m hurdle record holder, and is eager to break more records with the Terps.
Maryland native Joseph Ewan (sprints) graduated in the top five percent of the 2019 class from Mergenthaler Vocational-Technical High School in Baltimore. He holds state championship titles in the 100m, 200m and 4x400m relay. In 2019, he was named as the Outdoor Top State Competitor of the Year. Off the track, Ewan plans to become a computer programmer or work in computer information technology. Did we mention he's fully certified in Cisco?
Freshman Maxwell Myers graduated from Howard High School as the indoor and outdoor 800m dash and 4x400m relay record holder. He's also the 2019 4A Regional Champion in the 500m, 800m and 4x400m relay. Myers is looking to earn additional championship titles and carry on his reign of breaking school records with the Terps.
Chase McGeehan is a freshman from Clarksville, Md. He graduated from River Hill High School as the MPSSAA Indoor 2A State Champion in the 500m and earned the title as Outdoor Track Team MVP. Mcgeehan has seven siblings: Cooper, Chloe, Cade, Charlotte, Connor, Crystal and Cody.
Drake Murphy (hurdles) is also from the DMV area, and ran varsity track at Bishop McNamara High School for all four years. In 2018, he worked his way to be the 2018 WCAC 110m hurdle champion.
Sophomore Andrew Birgin (throws) used to play football but switched to track and field.
New York native, Shane McGuire is a junior transfer athlete from the University of Buffalo.
Triple jumper Gerald Norgbe and junior Rylan Flint (distance) will be joining the Terps this year as walk-ons.
Adetomiwa (Tommy) Adebayo will join the Terps in the spring.
Women:
Freshman Anna Coffin (distance) was an all around athlete throughout high school. Not only did she run track and cross country in high school, but she also was the team captain of Annapolis High School's lacrosse team. As the 2019 indoor 3200m Maryland State Champion, she's determined to pursue her collegiate indoor season with Maryland.
When sophomore Sarah Daniels (distance) isn't pushing herself on the track or on a cross country course, she enjoys swimming. Over the summer she broke the 200m medley relay record with her summer swim team. Daniels graduated from Lake Braddock High School in 2018 as the number one runner, after leading the team to three VHSL 6A State Championships. The one thing she's learned from running is: What you put into something is what you get out of it.
Freshman Samantha Facius (distance) was a varsity runner all four years of high school, and won the 2017 Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland (IAAM) Cross Country Championship. Her biggest sports thrill is receiving an All-American title for the first time at New Balance Nationals 2018. Facius has impressive times on the track, but can also hula hoop for more than two hours at a time. Maryland's provided opportunities for Facius academically and athletically. With 12 IAAM titles in various events, she plans to get a business degree in marketing or sales to eventually own her own business.
Kira Freedman (distance) broke Grafton High School's 5K record in 2017, two years after she was identified as a breakout runner. Freedman made her college cross country debut at the Mt. Saint Mary's 5K run, and will enter indoor focusing on distance.
Sarah George (throws) graduated from Oxon Hill High School in 2019 with the farthest shot put and discus marks. #DMVMADE. Before meets, George makes brownies or cookies for her teammates for good luck.
Claudia Dolan (distance) stays energized during cross country and track races with a cup of coffee. This energy has led her to earn Southern Maryland Athletic Conference (SMAC) First Team honors in 2015, 2017 and 2018. She is also a member of the women's cross country team, where she made her debut at the Mt. Saint Mary's 5K in August.
Alexandra Hargrett (middle distance) is a freshman accounting major, with aspirations to be as successful as olympian Allyson Felix. High school helped shape her into a well-rounded athlete, after running track and being the team captain for Atholton High School's basketball team for two years.
Whitney Snyder (pole vault) is Northwest High School's pole vault record holder for both the indoor and outdoor season. She helped lead her team to win the Maryland State Championships in 2017 and took first place at the Montgomery County Invitational in 2018.
Chloe Royce (hurdles, jumps, multi) adds to the list of Canadian natives for the Terps. Royce attended high school in Montreal.
Camryn Streib (middle distance) is from Columbia, Md., and is also on the women's cross country team.
Candanian native Ashley Germain (jumps, multi) will also join the Terps in the spring.
