Terps Up to No. 3 in Polls; Cowan Racks Up Awards

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Maryland men's basketball team officially moved up to No. 3 in the Associated Press rankings after racking up three victories en route to claiming the Orlando Invitational Championship over the weekend.
It marks Maryland's highest AP ranking since being ranked No. 2 in the Feb. 8, 2016 poll.
Additionally, senior guard Anthony Cowan Jr. was named the Orlando Invitational Most Valuable Player, and has since been rewarded by being named NCAA Player of the Week and Big Ten Co-Player of the Week.
It marked the first career Big Ten weekly honor for Cowan.
Cowan was sensational in Orlando, averaging 24.0 pts on 51-percent shooting, 4.3 assists, 2.3 steals and 3.0 rebounds. He shot 45-percent from beyond the arc.
The Bowie, Md., native opened the tournament with a career-best 30-point performance against Temple on 11-of-19 shooting. He followed that up with 20 points against Harvard and then 22 points in the title game against Marquette.
Cowan and the Terps return to action Wednesday when they host Notre Dame at 7:30 pm in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge.
