RALEIGH, N.C. – No. 9 Maryland battled at No. 13 NC State Thursday night, but a second half surge by the Wolfpack was the difference as the Terrapins fell 66-59 in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge at Reynolds Coliseum.
Taylor Mikesell led Maryland (7-2) with 13 points and
Blair Watson scored 12, all in the first half.
Ashley Owusu added 10 points, all in the fourth quarter, with nine assists.
Maryland led 18-15 at the end of the first quarter, thanks to two threes by Mikesell, one from Watson and one from
Stephanie Jones.
The Terrapins held steady in the second quarter as Watson hit three more three-pointers for nine of the Terps' 12 points in the period. Maryland took a 30-28 lead into halftime.
NC State changed the story in the third quarter, outscoring Maryland 18-9 in the period. The Wolfpack (9-0) started the quarter on an 8-0 run, led by four points from Kayla Jones. NC State held the lead at 46-39 to the start of the fourth quarter.
Diamond Miller,
Shakira Austin, Mikesell and Owusu all combined for a 10-4 Maryland run that cut the game to 50-49 with 6:18 to go. The Wolfpack's Kai Crutchfield hit a three to push it back to a four-point game.
Kaila Charles made a pair of three throws that cut it to a two-point game at 55-53 with 4:18 left. NC State's Elissa Cunane and Crutchfield responded with a five-point swing.
Maryland forced 28 NC State turnovers, scoring 20 points off of them. The Terrapins lost the battle on the glass, 51-27.
Crutchfield led the Wolfpack with 19 points and Cunane scored 16 with 15 rebounds.
The Terrapins are 11-2 all-time in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge and 5-2 on the road.

Fans are encouraged to bring toys for a Toys for Tot drive. Toys can be dropped off at the gates. Sunday's game is also the Terps' annual Teddy Bear Toss game. Fans can throw teddy bears and stuffed animals on the court at halftime. Items that land on targets on the court can win prizes, if items are pre-registed at marketing tables.
