
#7 Terps Drop Clash at #14 Iowa

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Junior Stephanie Jones tallied 21 points and eight rebounds as the No. 7 Maryland women's basketball team (23-3, 12-3 B1G) dropped a clash between the Big Ten's two top teams to No. 14 Iowa (21-5, 12-3), 86-73 on Sunday afternoon.
Freshman Taylor Mikesell added 14 points and five assists and junior Blair Watson scored 13 points in a game that featured 17 lead changes. The Terrapins and the Hawkeyes are now tied atop the Big Ten standings.
The teams went back and forth through the first quarter. The Hawkeyes went on an 8-2 run, then Maryland freshmen Mikesell and Shakira Austin responded with a 9-0 run themselves to give the Terps a two-point lead with 3:06 left in the first half. Maryland and Iowa were tied at 33 at the break.
Iowa used a strong third quarter and 25 second half free throw attemptsto take the game, led by 31 points from Megan Gustafson
Maryland fell behind and trailed by eight points at the end of the third quarter. A 9-0 run to start the fourth quarter, featuring four points from Mikesell gave the Terps a 59-58 lead with 7:34 to play. A layup by Watson with 2:04 to go cut it to a 4-point game, but the Hawkeyes went 11-for-12 at the foul line down the stretch to take the win.
Next, the Terrapins will return home to host Minnesota (19-7, 8-7) Thursday at 7 p.m. at the XFINITY Center. Parking is open for Thursday's contest. For tickets, click here.
