RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Maryland entered day two of the Amy S. Harrison Classic with 10-1 UNLV and hosts UC Riverside on the docket. The Terps ultimately dealt UNLV just their second loss of the season behind a Sydney Golden complete-game shutout, but fell to UC Riverside.
Game One – Box Score
Sydney Golden continued to dominate in the pitcher's circle for the Terps, dealing seven scoreless innings, striking out two batters, and only allowing six hits against a hot-hitting UNLV team that was batting well above .300
The Terps also had the offense to back it up, picking apart the Rebels' ace Jenny Bressler, forcing a pitching change in the fourth and keeping it going against the next pitcher.
UNLV got things going early by loading the bases in the bottom of the first, but Golden didn't crack under the pressure and got Maryland out of the inning unscathed.
Apart from Maryland's three up, three down first inning, they too got started quickly. Bailey Boyd got the Terps on the board first, singling home Gracie Voulgaris, and then a Taylor Wilson single scored Bailey Boyd to make it 2-0, Maryland.
Anna Kufta plated JoJo McRae on an RBI single in the third to tack on another run, but the Terps would leave runners on the corners and miss an opportunity to extend the lead further.
When the Maryland offense was quieted by the Rebel reliever in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, Golden kept UNLV from getting anything going offensively on their end.
The Terps added a couple additional runs in the top of the seventh – an Amanda Brashear RBI single that scored Taylor Okada and a Kufta RBI double that plated Brashear – and made it 5-0 Terps heading into the bottom of the inning.
Much like the rest of the game, UNLV couldn't produce offensively against Golden in the bottom of the seventh, managing two hits but falling to the Terps without putting up a run.
Game Two – Box Score
Maryland dropped its rematch against the hosts in the second game of the day, falling to the Highlanders 2-7.
Taylor Okada started off the game by smashing a leadoff triple, and scoring two at-bats later on a Kufta RBI single. Through one, the Terps led 1-0.
However, UC Riverside responded quickly, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first after getting four free passes. Sami Main came in to replace Kiana Carr in the circle in the bottom of the second and sent three batters down in order to get Maryland out of the inning.
The Terps would tack on another run in the top of third as Sammie Stefan hit an RBI double that scored Brashear, but it would prove to be the last run of the game for Maryland.
UC Riverside added three more runs in the bottom of the third which made it 6-2. Both teams went scoreless in the fourth and fifth innings, then in the bottom of the fifth, freshman pitcher Amelia Jarecke went in to relieve Sami Main and immediately tossed the first strikeout of her college career. She sent the next two batters down and held the Highlanders scoreless in the fifth.
The Terps went three up, three down in the top of the sixth and UC Riverside added an insurance run in the bottom of the frame which made it 7-2. Maryland's seventh-inning last chance effort fell short as the Terps wouldn't get another hit, falling to the home team.
Maryland will return to the diamond tomorrow at Noon (EST) to rematch Portland State.
