COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- In the second period of overtime, senior
Caroline Steele won the draw control, sprinted down the field and darted the game-winning goal to give the No. 2 Maryland women's lacrosse team (3-0) a 13-12 overtime win over No. 3 North Carolina (2-1) on Sunday afternoon.
Steele's winner gave Maryland the win after senior
Megan Taylor and the Maryland defense made numerous crucial stops to prevent the Tar Heels from netting a winner of their own at the end of regulation and overtime. Taylor finished the day with 14 saves, which included three point blank stops in the last eight minutes of the contest. Maryland forced turnovers on North Carolina's last two possessions in overtime and led turnover category 11-8 on the day.Â
"Another exciting game between Maryland and North Carolina," said head coach
Cathy Reese. "It was a tail of two halves for us. I'm proud of my team for having the determination and grit to gut that one out. It was a tough game when things weren't going our way. I'm glad that we stuck with it and stuck with the game plan. We were resilient and able to come up with a huge win in College Park."
Maryland took a 9-4 lead at halftime, before the Tar Heels took their first lead of the game, finishing off a 5-0 run with 12:47 left in the second half. Junior
Kali Hartshorn scored her third goal of the day to re-tie the game at with 6:13 left off a sophomore
Catie May assist on a no look shot. Both Maryland and Carolina made stop after stop down the stretch before Steele put one home in overtime.
Senior
Jen Giles was key to getting Maryland out to the early lead, with five points in the first half (three goals, two assists). The Terps led 3-0 off goals from Giles, Hartshorn and sophomore
Grace Griffin, before the Tar Heels responded with three in a row to tie it up. Giles and Hartshorn led the next spurt, a 6-1 run to finish the half. Junior
Brindi Griffin had her first goal of the year and an assist, while Giles notched two assists as well.Â
Junior
Hannah Warther and Steele scored unassisted strikes in the second half to give Maryland an 11-7 lead 10 minutes into the half. North Carolina then scored five straight before Hartshorn's tying goal and Steele's overtime winner.

Meghan Doherty tied her career-high to lead Maryland with four groundballs as part of a 17-15 Maryland advantage. Graduate student
Erica Evans had two points with a goal and assist.Â
Today's win improves Maryland's home winning streak to 79-straight, spanning over seven years. The Terps improve to 26-14 all-time against North Carolina and 13-0 in College Park.Â
Next, the Terps will travel up to Baltimore for a 5:00 p.m. game at UMBC on Wednesday night.Â
