TROY, Ala. – Maryland (1-3) dropped two games at the Trojan Classic on Saturday, a 10-0 loss to the ninth-ranked Crimson Tide and a 10-1 loss to Troy, who completed the two-game sweep. The Terps return to competition next weekend for five games at the Houston Classic in Houston, Texas.
Game 1 – Box Score
The Tide's stellar All-SEC outfielder Elissa Brown singled in the opening at-bat of the game, and quickly raced to second – not surprising, considering her 30 stolen bases last year – but the Terps were ready, and Voulgaris sent a laser to Okada and tagged Brown out at second. Brown had never been tagged out at second before in her Alabama career.
However, the perennial powerhouse and 2018 Super Regional participant imposed its will early on against the Terps as they recorded three hits, reached three more on fielder's choices, and scored four runs in the first inning.
Alabama didn't hold back in the second, scoring five more runs on five hits, and causing an early pitching change for Maryland as
Kiana Carr entered for
Sydney Golden. Later in the inning, Galvan replaced Carr and got the Terps out of the inning.
The Terps offense remained stagnant for the rest of the game against Alabama's Sarah Cornell, who pitched a complete game and held the Terps to two hits overall.
Game 2 – Box Score
Despite an unusually cold Alabama afternoon, Troy's hitters got hot early in Maryland's second game of the day as the Trojans plated five in the bottom of the first on four hits and two errors.
Sammie Stefan, who had an exceptional batting day on Friday of the Trojan Classic, was determined to not let the game get away from the Terps early and hit a double that snuck down the left field line.
Gracie Voulgaris,
Bailey Boyd,
Shelby Younkin and
Regan Kerr all did their parts to load up the bases in the top of the second but were only able to score one runner on a Younkin RBI single as a back-to-back strikeout and lineout ended most of Maryland's offense for the day.
Troy opened it up in the bottom of the third, scoring five more on six hits and causing the Terp's first pitching change as
Victoria Galvan entered for
Sami Main, who pitched 2.1 innings, allowing seven hits and seven runs (five earned).
Freshman
Amelia Jarecke came in to pitch in the bottom of the fourth and pitched a scoreless inning, leaving the Terps their last chance to close the gap or get run-ruled, but a bases loaded double play in the top of the fifth ended the game as the Trojans completed the sweep.
