NEWARK, Del. – Freshman Maxwell Costes and sophomore Chris Alleyne both hit late inning home runs to lock up an 11-6 victory for the Maryland baseball team over Delaware at Bob Hannah Stadium Wednesday afternoon.
The Terrapins (10-5) fell behind early to the Blue Hens (1-14), but rallied behind a strong offensive performance and a solid showing from the bullpen. Maryland has now scored seven or more runs in five consecutive games.
"You've got to be good at playing from behind if you want to be any good," head coach Rob Vaughn said. "Our at bats were awesome early, we just didn't have a ton to show for it. The pitcher that changed the momentum of the game was Tuck Tucker. He did a nice job. Maxwell gave us a big swing late."
Delaware took the early advantage with a run in the first and two in the second off Maryland starter Drew Wilden. Maryland struck back with a four-spot in the fourth. Tommy Gardiner reached on a hit by pitch to start the frame before Caleb Walls brought him home with a triple. Randy Bednar then slapped a single to left to score Walls.
After Taylor Wright lined out and Costes was intentionally walked, Benjamin Cowles hit a double down the left field line to plate two and give the Terps the lead.
Maryland's bullpen stabilized the contest after Wilden was lifted in the second. Right-hander Will Glock tossed an inning and two thirds scoreless before Tucker tossed a pair of scoreless frames. Glock ended up earning his second career win.
In the eighth, back-to-back singles from Walls and Alleyne put runners on the corners. After Bednar struck out, Wright was intentionally walked to set up Costes, who hit his first career grand slam over the wall in left center. The homer was the third of the season for Costes and his third in the last five games. He leads the Big Ten with 19 RBIs.
Delaware did plate three runs in the bottom of the inning, but the Terps responded in the ninth. Sebastian Holte-Mancera doubled with one out, advanced to third on a groundout and then scored on a wild pitch. Walls then reached on a hit by pitch before Alleyne launched a two-run home run to left field, his third in the last two games.
Maryland returns to action this weekend as No. 17 East Carolina comes to Bob "Turtle" Stadium for a three-game set. First pitch for Friday's game is set for 6:30 p.m., and the action can be seen live on BTN Plus via BTN2Go. Fans can also listen to the action on the Maryland Baseball Network.
