COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Kiana Carr earned her first victory in the circle with the Terps against UMBC and Maryland won the slugfest with Rhode Island, going 2-0 on the day and getting just the second two-win day of the season to open the Maryland Invitational on a beautiful day in College Park.
Game One – Box Score
Maryland got on the board first and never let up, never trailing in the first contest of the day. Gracie Voulgaris got the Terps on the board first, singling home Taylor Okada and notching her 17th season RBI which ranks second on the team.
Kiana Carr pitched the complete game for the Terps, earning her first win at Maryland and tossing seven innings allowing just three hits and two earned runs.
In the bottom of the third, Voulgaris drew the bases-loaded walk brought home JoJo McRae to make it 2-0 through three.
UMBC scored their two lone runs in the fourth inning when a wild pitch and an RBI single tied it up at 2-2. Bailey Boyd hit her second homer of the season, scoring Voulgaris and Brashear and giving the Terps a three-run cushion in the bottom of the fifth.
Maryland would add to its lead in the bottom of the sixth as Taylor Wilson hit a 2-RBI double, Amanda Brashear drove in a run on a groundout, and Taylor Okada scored on a Bailey Boyd RBI single.
The Retrievers of UMBC went three up, three down in the top of the seventh and Maryland would open its home tournament with a win.
Game Two – Box Score
The Terps got into trouble early against Rhode Island as two first-inning home runs for the Rams made it 3-0 early on, but would stay in it the whole game and come away with the gritty win.
Maryland got on the board first on a Kufta RBI single, and would add three more runs in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead as Taylor Wilson knocked in a run on a double and Micaela Abbatine went yard for the second time this season, scoring Wilson.
The Rams hit their third homer of the game in the top of the fifth, answering the Terps' rally and tying it up at four apiece. Maryland would reclaim the lead in the bottom of the fifth however, forcing a couple pitching changes and scoring runs on a wild pitch and a Boyd RBI single.
Sydney Golden came in to relieve Sami Main in the top of the sixth and pitched 1.1 scoreless and hitless inning, getting the save as the Terps would win their second of the day.
Maryland plays one tomorrow against Bryant at 3:00 p.m.
