COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Maryland topped Villanova today to string together its fourth straight win and finished the Maryland Invitational undefeated, its first undefeated tournament performance (of four or more games) since 2012 when the Terps went 5-0 also at the Maryland Invitational.
Amanda Brashear, Anna Kufta, Bailey Boyd and Micaela Abbatine finished the game with two hits apiece, and Sammie Stefan went yard for the third time this season.
Maryland got on the board first on an Abbatine RBI groundout, and Stefan's three-run homer made it 4-0 early.
The Wildcats responded in the fifth with a solo homer of their own, but a triple from Brashear and a double from Kufta gave the Terps two more runs and stretched the Maryland lead to five.
Villanova wasn't going down without a fight, threatening with four runs in the top of the seventh, but they weren't able to execute the comeback and the Terps would come out ahead in the end.
Sydney Golden started the game in the circle for the Terps, pitching 6.1 innings and holding the Wildcats to three earned runs and nine hits. Sami Main came in and got the save, sending two batters down in order with a strikeout and a flyout to secure the win for Maryland.
Maryland plays Virginia on Tuesday, March 19 at the Maryland Softball Stadium to close nonconference play.
