COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Behind a doubles point and five singles victories, the Maryland women's tennis team posted an impressive, 6-1, win over Rutgers in its conference opener on Saturday.
The Terrapins got out to a fast start and never looked back, topping the Scarlet Knights for the fifth-consecutive season. The 6-1 win was the second time Maryland beat Rutgers by that margin, with the previous three wins coming by a score of 7-0.
Maryland took advantage of strong doubles play to begin the match, clinching the opening point with wins from Eva Alexadrova / Millie Stretton at first doubles, as well as Saya Usui / Anastasiia Gevel at third doubles. Maryland's second doubles pair of Arnelle Sullivan and Amber Policare led their match 5-4 when it was ruled unfinished due to the Maryland clinch.
The Terps then kept the pressure on when singles play began, as Gevel posted a straight-set win at third singles to give the home side a 2-0 advantage. Alexandrova then brought Maryland within one point of a clinch, winning 6-1, 6-4, at the top singles spot to capture her fourth singles victory of the year.
Stretton was then able to clinch the match for the Terrapins, winning her fifth match of the season to secure the victory.
Sophomore Zoe Kulkarni and redshirt sophomore Amber Policare put points on the board for Maryland following the clinch, as Kulkarni won in straight sets at sixth singles while Policare grinded out a three-setter in the five spot.
Senior Arnelle Sullivan dropped the lone singles point for Maryland, losing in a third-set tiebreaker at fourth singles.
Maryland will be back in action next Saturday, hosting the Wisconsin Badgers at the Junior Tennis Champions Center in College Park. Opening serve is scheduled for noon.
