COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Senior right-hander Hunter Parsons tossed eight innings and struck out 10, but the Maryland baseball teams could not find runs late in a 3-2 loss to Creighton at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium Friday night.
The Terrapins (12-9) and Bluejays (9-5) combined for just nine hits on a cold night in College Park. All five runs in the game were scored on home runs; three solo shots for Creighton and a two-run homer from Randy Bednar in the fifth for Maryland.
Creighton took the lead on an Isaac Collins solo homer in the first to lead-off the game before hitting two more solo shots in the second to increase the advantage to 3-0. From there, Parsons allowed just one more hit. The senior righty struck out 10, tying his career high, to no walks and hit three batters.
Bednar's two-run homer in the fifth, following a Chris Alleyne walk, was the only scoring from the Terps. Maryland put runners in scoring position in the fourth, eighth and ninth, but could never pull even with the Bluejays. Bednar finished the day with two hits while Taylor Wright reached base twice.
Freshman right-hander Will Glock tossed a scoreless ninth to set up the Terps in the bottom half. Freshman Benjamin Cowles walked to begin the frame before moving up on a Justin Vought sac bunt. Sophomore Tommy Gardiner and Alleyne were unable to bring Cowles home and recorded the final two outs of the game.
Maryland and Creighton will contest game two of their series Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m., at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium. Fans can listen to the action on the Maryland Baseball Network.
