COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Sophomore catcher Justin Vought hit a three-run home run in the sixth, but the Maryland baseball team fell to Creighton, 5-3, at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium Saturday afternoon.
Vought's homer was all the scoring the Terrapins (12-10) would have on the day against the Bluejays (10-5). Maryland starter right-hander Zach Thompsons tossed five innings and struck out five while giving up three earned runs. The Terps tallied seven hits for the game.
Creighton took the lead in the third on a Parker Upton RBI double and a Jake Holton RBI single. The Bluejays added to the lead on a suicide squeeze in the fifth. Thompson battled through his five innings before giving way to right-hander Elliott Zoellner, who struck out three in two innings of work.
Maryland stranded the bases loaded in the fifth. Caleb Walls opened the inning with a walk before AJ Lee doubled to left-center. After Randy Bednar popped out, Taylor Wright was intentionally walked and Maxwell Costes grounded out to end the inning.
In the sixth, Michael Pineiro walked and Benjamin Cowles was hit by a pitch. Vought then hit a home run to left-center field, his third of the season, to tie the game. Creighton came back in the eighth to plate two runs off Maryland relievers Mark DiLuia and Daniel O'Connor.
In the ninth, the Terps loaded the bases with two outs, but could not bring home a run as Tommy Gardiner struck out looking to end the game. Lee led the Terps offensively, tallying three hits and reaching base four times.
Maryland and Creighton will complete their three-game Sunday morning at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium with first pitch set for 11 a.m. Fans can listen to the action on the Maryland Baseball Network.
