COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Terps got their first home conference win of the season in walk-off fashion, taking down Ohio State, who received votes in both major polls.
Solid performances in the circle for both teams kept the scoring low throughout the game, as Sydney Golden went the distance, allowing seven hits and one earned run while striking out three batters.
The Buckeyes got on the board first, getting a run across in the first inning on a sacrifice fly. Maryland would respond, however, and JoJo McRae's speed got her home all the way from second on a sacrifice bunt by Amanda Brashear to tie it up at one apiece.
Ohio State would score another in the third after a fielding error allowed a runner to score, but a Golden strikeout would get the Terps out of the inning without any further damage.
After scoreless fourth and fifth innings, Maryland tied it up at two apiece through six when an Anna Kufta RBI-single plated McRae, and a scoreless Ohio State top of the seventh set the Terps in position to walk it off.
Taylor Wilson led off and got aboard after getting hit by a pitch, and Kiana Carr came in to run the bases for her. Carr advanced to second on a wild pitch, and a groundout from Regan Kerr should've given the Buckeyes their first out of the inning. However, the Ohio State first baseman airmailed a throw attempting to get Carr out at third, and Carr raced all the way home and scored the winning run.
Maryland's win is the first conference win of the season, and its first win at home since going 4-0 at the Maryland Invitational. The Terps face Ohio State again for the second game of the series Saturday at 2 p.m.
