Terps Head to Fifth Straight Big Ten Championship

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.  –  Top-seeded Maryland (28-3) advanced to its fifth straight Big Ten Championship game with a 72-71 thriller victory over fourth-seeded Michigan Saturday in the Big Ten Semifinals at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

Junior Kaila Charles made two free throws with 10.3 seconds left, freshman Shakira Austin notched a block with 1.5 seconds to go and Maryland's defense led the Terps past Michigan (21-11) down the stretch.

The Terps, who are ranked No. 8 in both polls, will take on No. 10 Iowa (25-6) Sunday at 6 p.m. in the Big Ten Championship game.

The win was also Maryland's 1,000th in its 48 years as a program. Maryland is the 12th Division I program to reach the 1,000 win mark.

"It speaks volumes about the University of Maryland and the program and the legacy," said Brenda Frese, who has coached Maryland to 457 wins. "I can't say enough about the two coaches [Dottie McKnight and Chris Weller] before me who set the standard for me to follow. Obviously we're one of just a few programs in the country to own a milestone like this and it's pretty special."

Charles finished with a game-high 22 points, 13 in the second half, junior Blair Watson added 14 and junior Stephanie Jones scored 12. Sophomore guard Channise Lewis added 10 points and six assists.

Nicole Munger scored 20 points for Michigan, and Naz Hillmon had 16.

Hillmon's putback with 21.8 seconds left gave Michigan a 72-71 lead. After a video review for a timeout called, Charles was fouled by Hillmon and made both foul shots and finished with 22 points.

Then the Wolverines got their chance.

The first shot, Amy Dilk's short floater, was swatted out of bounds by Austin. Michigan called another timeout, but Hallie Thome lost the ball on the inbounds pass.

Maryland trailed by three at halftime, 40-37. The Terps went on a 13-2 run in the third quarter to grow the league to nine at 65-56 the end of the third quarter. But the league's most dominant school over the past five seasons finally found a way to win No. 1,000 on its first try.

"I'm glad I was able to get the opportunity to play for this program under coach Frese," Charles said. "And I'm glad I'm a part of making history here in the program."

Austin notched three blocks on the day, giving her 92 on the year – the most ever in a season by a Maryland player. She topped Kris Kirchner's record of 91 blocks in the 1978-79 season.

Earlier in the day Saturday, Charles was one of 15 of the top players in the country named to the Wooden Award National Ballot.

The Terps will tip off against the Hawkeyes at 6 p.m. Sunday for the Big Ten Tournament title. The matchup will be televised around the world on ESPN2, the Watch ESPN app and WatchESPN.com.

Maryland is 13-1 all-time in the Big Ten Tournament after winning the 2015, 2016 and 2017 Tournament titles. The Terps are 10-1 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse and Frese is 13-2 in the Big Ten Tournament.
