BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Maryland split its Saturday doubleheader with Indiana today as the Terps came away with the win in the first game, 4-3, but was dealt the series loss in game two, falling 10-1 in five innings.
Game One - Box Score
Like they have all season, the Terps came out in the first inning guns blazing, quickly jumping to a 3-0 lead on a
Sammie Stefan RBI single and a
Taylor Wilson two-RBI single.
Indiana got one back in the bottom of the inning, scoring on an RBI single, but
Victoria Galvan limited the damage to just one. The Terps added another run in the third on a Stefan solo homer, her team-leading sixth of the season.
The Hoosiers made it interesting in the bottom of the fourth, scoring a couple runs on a wild pitch and an RBI single which cut the Maryland lead to one. The Terps couldn't add to their lead however, and the one-run lead would remain for the duration of the game.
In the bottom of the seventh with
Sami Main in the circle for Maryland, Indiana had the winning run on base but a flyout secured the win for the Terps.
Game Two - Box Score
Indiana came out firing in game two, launching a two-run home run in the first inning and piling it on in every additional inning of the five-inning contest.
The Terps cycled through
Sydney Golden,
Sami Main and
Victoria Galvan in the circle but each pitcher was overpowered by the Indiana offense that fell mostly flat in game one of the doubleheader.
Indiana's ace, Tara Trainer, started in the circle for the Hoosiers and limited the Terps to just one hit while striking out a pair. Askland, Indiana's freshman, pitched an inning of relief, allowing three hits and a run, but kept the eight-run advantage necessary to run-rule Maryland.
Maryland returns to Maryland Softball Stadium next weekend for a three-game series vs. Penn State.
