WASHINGTON, D.C. – The No. 2 Maryland women's lacrosse team (16-0) outscored No. 24 Georgetown (8-7) 13-0 in the second half to come back and defeat the Hoyas, 17-8 on Wednesday evening.
Â
"Really proud of how our girls reset in the second half," said head coach
Cathy Reese. "That was awesome. Kali and Lizzie dominated the center circle, we didn't allow a goal and offensively we were attacking the cage well. That paid off and we were able to go on a 13-0 run there."
Â
Down 8-4 at halftime, the Terps faced their biggest deficit of the season and largest halftime deficit since 2012 when Maryland was down 9-4 to North Carolina at the break. Firing out of the intermission, Maryland responded by outscoring Georgetown 13-0 in the second half, their biggest goal differential of any half this season.
Â
Senior
Jen Giles tied her career-best with seven points (five goals, two assists) to lead the way. Graduate student
Erica Evans had four goals while both junior
Brindi Griffin and sophomore
Grace Griffin each tallied three goals.
Â
The Terps dominated possession, winning the draw control battle 21-6, led by a season-best 12 from junior
Kali Hartshorn. Junior
Lizzie Colson also had a season-best seven.
Â
Maryland started its scoring flurry three minutes into the second half after two
Megan Taylor saves by a free position dart by senior
Meghan Siverson. Giles was a part of six of Maryland's 13 second half goals, scoring four and assisting on two. Evans had three of her four in the second half as well while G. Griffin had all three of hers.
Â
Georgetown only took six shots in the second half, with Taylor saving four of them and the other two being off target. Maryland also forced numerous turnovers and shot clock violations to keep Georgetown off the board, the third time Maryland has held an opponent scoreless in a half this season.
Â
In the first half, B. Griffin opened the scoring for Maryland six minutes in to cut it to 2-1. Georgetown led the entire first period and scored the final three goals.
Â
In the contest as a whole, senior
Shelby Mercer stood out defensively, posting three groundballs and two caused turnovers, both team highs.
Â
Now finished with both their nonconference and road slates for the 2019 season, Maryland will close out their conference and road slate next Saturday against No. 21 Johns Hopkins at 4:30 at Capital One Field at Maryland Stadium.
