Terps Top James Madison Tuesday Night

HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Maryland baseball team (25-27, 9-12 Big Ten) came from behind and won 6-5 over James Madison (30-22, 10-11 CAA) at Eagle Field Tuesday night.

What to Know

  • Sophomore Randy Bednar continued his fantastic season, notching three hits including a two-run homer that gave the Terps the lead for good in the seventh. Maryland scored their six runs on 11 hits and used seven pitchers to get the 27 outs.
  • Left-hander Drew Wilden started the game and gave up a pair of unearned runs after passed balls allowed runners to advance in consecutive innings and eventually score. James Madison led 2-0 after two innings.
  • Maryland got a pair of solid relief outings from right-hander Elliott Zoellner (2.0 IP, 2 K, 0 H) and right-hander Mark DiLuia (1.0 IP, 2 K, 0 H) to keep the deficit at 2-0.
  • The Terps tied the ballgame in the sixth on a Michael Pineiro double off the right field wall that plated Bednar and Taylor Wright.
  • After James Madison grabbed the lead right back in the sixth with two runs, the Terps responded with three more in the seventh. Senior AJ Lee used an infield single to plate Chris Alleyne before Bednar hit his tenth homer of the year to left field.
  • Lee gave the Terps some insurance with a solo homer, his fourth of the year, in the ninth. Senior closer John Murphy allowed a run in the ninth, but closed out the game for his tenth save of the season.

Other Stuff

  • Bednar has been incredible this season and reached another milestone Tuesday, notching his 50th RBI. Bednar is the first Maryland player to reach 50 RBIs since 2015 when Brandon Lowe and Jose Cuas both notched 53.
  • Bednar has a hit in 10 straight games, the longest streak of his career. Freshman Benjamin Cowles has reached base in 10 straight games.
  • Murphy's tenth save made him just the third player in Maryland history to reach double digit saves in a season. Kevin Mooney achieved the feat in 2014 (13) and 2015 (11) and Brett Cecil did it in 2006 (13). Murphy is now tied with Dan Gentzler and Charles Devereux for third on Maryland's all-time saves list with 15.
  • The Terps surpassed their win total of 24 from last season.
  • Freshman catcher Zach Doss made the first start of his career.
  • Tuesday's game marked the debut of Maryland athletic trainer Evan Lobato on the Maryland Baseball Network as he joined Connor Newcomb for a pregame interview, talking everything from Game of Thrones to Norma-Tec. The former Quinnipiac pitcher and New Jersey high school baseball legend was then called into action twice on the night, checking in on Sean Fisher and AJ Lee when they were hit with baseballs. Thanks for all you do, Evan.
  • Maryland assistant coach and former standout player Matt Swope was without his normal third base coaching helmet as it was dented while being sent back to Maryland from Minneapolis after a Delta mess up on Sunday night. Tough one for Swoper, but he did get another helmet, and maybe that new one is lucky.
