#1 Terps Advance to National Title Game, Defeat Northwestern 25-13

BALTIMORE, MD – Junior Brindi Griffin notched a career-high seven points on six goals and one assist to pace No. 1 Maryland to a 25-13 victory over No. 4 Northwestern in Friday's NCAA Semifinals at Homewood Stadium, leading wire-to-wire, and scoring its most goals as a team since netting 25 against Quinnipiac on March 11, 2004.

With tonight's win, head coach Cathy Reese tallied her 300th career victory. Maryland's 25 goals marks the most ever scored in a NCAA Semifinal, breaking the previous record of 20, set by the Terps in 2017.

"That was a heck of an effort by my team tonight," said Reese. "To come off a Big Ten Championship loss to Northwestern, make the changes that we did and really have our foot on the gas the entire time is something I'm really proud of. These guys stuck with it, played together and worked together. We shot well tonight, we defended well tonight and Meggy T had some awesome saves against a really good offense. We're looking forward to advancing to Sunday."

Grace Griffin added four goals for the Terps while Jen Giles and Erica Evans tallied three each, and senior goalkeeper Megan Taylor made 14 saves and shut out the Wildcats for the final 19 minutes of the semifinal.

Maryland quickly got off to a 3-0 lead, courtesy of goals from Caroline Steele, G. Griffin, and Catie May. Northwestern responded with two of its own, then  Giles tallied her first of the game to make it 4-2. Northwestern got two back to tie it up at four, but they would never lead in the contest as Maryland stayed a goal above the Wildcats for the remainder of the game.

Grace Griffin scored back-to-back goals to complete the first-half hat trick, and B. Griffin, Hannah Warther, Evans, and Julia Braig – who buried the first goal in her college career off a steal and score near the halfway mark of the first half – also notched goals in the first half. Northwestern closed the first half with a goal, but the Terps would take a four-goal lead into the half.

The Terps outscored Northwestern 14-6 in the second half, shutting down the Wildcats for the final 19 minutes of the game and ending the game on a nine-game goal streak.

The Terps will take on Boston College, who beat North Carolina 15-14 in double overtime in the previous semifinal, on Sunday, May 26 at Noon ET. The game will be broadcast live on ESPNU and available to stream via WatchESPN.

Maryland will make its 22nd all-time appearance in the National Title game Sunday, and has now defeated its semifinal opponent by 10+ goals in three of its last four seasons.
