WASHINGTON, D.C. – Two Terps, seniors Jen Giles and Megan Taylor, were named finalists for lacrosse's most prestigious honor, the Tewaaraton Award, on Thursday evening.
Giles and Taylor are both team captains and have been essential pieces to leading Maryland to an 18-1 record, undefeated regular season and fifth straight Big Ten Regular Season Championship this season.
Giles leads Maryland with 50 goals, 22 assists and 72 points this season and is third in the Big Ten in goals and assists and fifth in points. The senior has had at least three goals in nine different games this season, has led the team in assists in 10 different games and in points in eight different games. Giles has been named the Big Ten Midfielder of the Year and an All-Big Ten selection this season.
Taylor has been spectacular in goal all season long, leading the country with a 56.3 save percentage, 178 saves to only 138 goals allowed and has been crucial to a defense that has held opponents to just over seven goals per game, tallying over a 50-percent save percentage in 15 of 19 games this season. Taylor was named the Big Ten Goaltender of the Year for the fourth year in a row, was an All-Big Ten selection and was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week for six weeks in a row and the IWLCA National Defensive Player of the Week three different times.
This is both Giles and Taylor's first time being named Tewaaraton finalists. Taylor is only the second goalie ever to be a finalist for the prestigious award and the first since 2013.
Maryland has produced eight Tewaaraton winners, the most in the history of the award, including winning in six of the past seven years. Jen Adams won the first Tewaaraton in 2001, and Caitlyn Phipps earned the honor in 2010. Katie Schwarzmann won back-to-back Tewaaratons in 2012 and 2013. Taylor Cummings became the first ever three-time winner from 2014-16, while Zoe Stuckenberg took home the honors in 2017.
The Terps have had 25 finalists in the 19 years of the award. This is the 13th straight season that Maryland has had at least one finalist for lacrosse's most esteemed honor and the eighth time that Maryland's had two finalists.
Giles and Taylor are joined by Dempsey Arsenault (Boston College), Sam Apuzzo (Boston College) and Selena Lasota (Northwestern).
The Tewaaraton Award annually honors the top male and top female college lacrosse player in the United States. Finalists come from a pool of 25 men's and 25 women's nominees. The Tewaaraton recipients will be announced May 30.
