7/21/2019 11:24:00 AM | Track & Field
Past, present, and future Terps will toe the line this summer for an abundance of competitions on a global scale. An opportunity for athletes to qualify for the IAAF World Championships in Doha is on the line at each National Championship.
Already achieving success in his summer campaign is recent graduate, Greg Thompson (Great Britain). Thompson competed in the FISU (Summer Universiade Games) in Napoli, Italy. Thompson placed fourth in the discus with a mark of 62.46m. He will follow this up with a performance at the London Diamond League meet on July 21, prior to the British Championships. Rising junior Alice Barnsdale will join Thompson in Birmingham for the Championships, competing in the Hammer Throw. Barnsdale will compete on August 24 and Thompson will compete on August 25.
Terrapin athletes will heavily populate the Canadian Championships, hosted in Montreal July 25-28. Alexandra Lucki, Christine Laurie, and Mackenzie Morgan will compete in the middle distance events. Lucki recently set a new personal best of 4:13.39 in the 1500m at the Stumptown Twilight. Laurie will also toe the line in the 1500m event and Morgan will run in the U20 section of the 800m run. In the field, Mikella Lefebvre-Oatis will compete in the high jump. Lefebvre-Oatis has focused on training since competing at the NCAA finals in June. Incoming multi-event athlete, Chloe Royce will compete in the hurdle and jump events in the U20 sections. Class of 2017 graduate and 2016 Olympic Qualifier Micha Powell will compete in the 400m dash at the championships. Xahria Santiago was scheduled to compete in the 400m hurdles, but has since scratched from this competition.
A trio of high jumpers will compete at the USA Track and Field Championships. Class of 2015 graduates Amina Smith and Amber Melville will jump on Saturday, July 27. Class of 2018 graduate Peyton Wade will join her fellow Terps in the field. Smith has a season best of 1.90m (6'2 ¾") and is ranked.
Thea Lafond (class of 2015) competes for the Commonwealth of Dominica in the triple jump. Her season best in the triple jump includes a mark of 14.38m (47'2 ¼") which exceeds the World Championship standard. Lafond will automatically qualify based on this performance.
Chioma Onyekwere (class of 2016) will be attempting to qualify for the Nigerian National team, competing in the Discus throw. Onyekwere holds a season best of 60.75m.
Stay tuned for updates on the stellar performances of our athletes over the summer championship series.
