LOS ANGELES -- Despite goals from junior Eric Matzelevich and sophomore Brayan Padilla, the third-ranked Maryland men's soccer team fell to UCLA, 3-2, at Wallis Annenberg Stadium in Los Angeles Friday night.

View From The Box
  • Maryland (1-2-0) started brightly, with Matzelevich putting the Terps ahead in just the sixth minute. UCLA would then score three consecutive goals, all from Milan Iloski before Padilla's goal gave Maryland life late in the second half. The Terps pushed for an equalizer in the final 19 minutes, but ultimately fell short.
  • Matzelevich's goal gave the Terps a dream start. After Maryland's press forced a UCLA giveaway in the Maryland attacking third, senior Eli Crognale slipped the ball through to Matzelevich. The junior forward's initial shot was saved but deflected right back to Matzelevich, who put his second effort in the back of the net from 10 yards out.
  • The goal was the first of the season for Matzelevich.
  • Iloski took over the game for UCLA. His first tally came in the 19th-minute right hit right-footed effort went through the arms of Russell Shealy in the Maryland net. Shealy could do nothing about Iloski's second effort, an unsaveable strike in the 51st minute. Iloski's then took advantage of a Shealy blunder to score his third goal in the 62nd minute.
  • Padilla gave Maryland life in the 72nd minute. After the Terps drew a free kick in the top of the box, Padilla curled a pretty left-footed strike past Justin Garces in the UCLA net. The goal was Padilla's first at Maryland.
  • Maryland pushed for an equalizer and had multiple chances to find a third tally. Sophomore Brett St. Martin had a headed effort that Garces barely palmed away in the 81st minute.
  • Freshmen Chris Rindov and Jacob Chakroun made their Maryland debuts Friday night. The Terps outshot the Bruins 11-8.
