#12 Maryland Soars Past #14 Arkansas, 115-96

Box Score

ESTERO, Fla. -- No. 12 Maryland bounced back with a 115-96 dominating win over No. 14 Arkansas Sunday in the Terrapins' final game in the #BeachBubble at Florida Gulf Coast.  The Terps (2-1) controlled both ends of the floor from the tip. Their 115 points are their most ever over a ranked opponent and the Terrapins' 41-point third quarter is their most ever in a quarter.

This is the Terps 'most points scored against a Power 5 opponent since a 117-53 victory over Wake Forest in 1980.

Senior Katie Benzan led the way hitting eight threes for to tie her career-high 28 points. She was named Gulf Coast Showcase MVP. Senior Chloe Bibby followed with 23 points and 12 rebounds for her first double-double as a Terrapin. Sophomore Diamond Miller picked up her first career double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman Angel Reese added 16 points and was named to the All-Tournament Team. Sophomore Ashley Owusu added 12 points, eight boards and seven assists.

"This was a terrific response by our team today," head coach Brenda Frese said. "We were disappointed in our play yesterday and I thought it said a lot about this team and the pride to be able to come out. They were locked in. You see where the talent is on our team. Obviously, we're still young and getting used to playing with one another, but I thought they kept with the system today."

Maryland set the tempo from tip-off forcing five turnovers and taking a 27-17 lead into the second quarter.

Back-to-back layups by Owusu forced an Arkansas (3-1) timeout that prompted a Razorbacks comeback attempt. Their 6-2 run was cut short by one of Bibby's five three-pointers on the evening.

The Terps led by a significant 20-point margin at the half thanks to a set of late back-to-back three-pointers from Bibby, Benzan and the first collegiate points for freshman Taisiya Kozlova. Maryland ended the half shooting .583 from the field (21-39) with eight made three-pointers.

Maryland's largest lead came in the third quarter following a flurry of three-pointers giving the Terps 28-point margin lead at 76-48 with just over five minutes remaining in the third.

The Terrapins went 12-for-14 (.857) at the free-throw line in the second half and 19-for-23 (.826) for the game. They shot 57% from three-point range (16-31) for the game.

Maryland finished with 115 points, setting the #BeachBubble Tournament record.

Maryland will open its home slate with a 6 p.m. game vs. Towson (1-0) at the XFINITY Center Thursday. The Terps-Tigers game will be televised on the Big Ten Network. The season will begin with no fans in attendance at XFINITY Center out of an abundance of caution for the health and safety of our student-athletes and fans. Maryland athletics is hopeful that some fans will be welcomed to XFINITY Center as the season progresses and health conditions permit.
