Maryland Wins Season Opener over Charleston Southern, 11-2

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The University of Maryland baseball team won its season-opener on Friday night vs. Charleston Southern, 11-2. The Terps outhit the Buccaneers 10-4, while junior LHP Sean Fisher earned his first win of the season in his first career start.

What to Know
  • Maryland won its first season opener since 2018, when the Terps beat Tennessee 4-0 on Feb. 16 in Knoxville
  • Chris Alleyne doubled on the first pitch of Maryland's 2020 baseball season, sending a scorcher down the left field line to kick off the game. Alleyne would advance on a wild pitch and score on a Randy Bednar RBI groundout for the first Terps' run of the season.
  • Sean Fisher, in his first collegiate start, sent the Buccaneers down in order in the bottom of the first inning via two groundouts and a strikeout
  • Charleston Southern plated a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the second. The first run was the result of a defensive miscue at second base, while the second run came in on a throwing error out of right field.
  • Fisher faced the minimum in the third and fourth innings, keeping Maryland in the game while the offense hit a lull.
  • Maryland produced a pair of runs in the top of the sixth on a pair of defensive miscues by the hosts. With two down, Tucker Flint scored when the Buccaneers' third baseman sailed a throw over first base, then Benjamin Cowles scored on a Tommy Gardiner infield fly which found the dirt.
  • Sam Bello appeared in the bottom of the sixth after a Sean Fisher strikeout. Bello escaped the inning scoreless, allowing just a walk.
  • Maryland opened it up in the top of the seventh, plating five runs on two hits. Three of the runs were the result of hit batsmen. Alleyne's second double of the day brought in two more runs before a strikeout ended the inning.
  • Bello struck out the side in the bottom of the eighth on 13 pitches.
  • The Terps got three more runs across in the top of the ninth after Gardiner singled, Alleyne was HBP, and Troy Schreffler Jr. drove them both in on a triple, his first collegiate hit.
  • Sam Bello faced the minimum in the ninth to secure the win for the Terps.
Other Stuff
  • Tucker Flint went 3-for-4 in his collegiate debut. The 36th round draft pick in the 2019 MLB Draft seemed cool as a cucumber in his first time playing college ball, racking up the most hits on the team while reaching base four times and scoring two runs.
  • Chris Alleyne hit two doubles, one of four Terps to have multi-hit performances. The others were Flint, Bednar, and Gardiner.
  • Four Terps had multi-RBI outings: Alleyne, Schreffler, Bednar, and Gardiner.
  • Sean Fisher earned the win for the Terps, his first-ever win as a starting pitcher and just the fourth of his career.
  • Maryland batters were hit by six pitches tonight. Last year, the Terps were hit by 96 pitches, the highest mark in the Big Ten. Bednar was struck twice, while Alleyne, Costes, Vought, and Flint were all victims of poor command.
  • Austin Chavis, Troy Schreffler Jr., Tucker Flint, and Sam Bello all made their debuts as Terrapins tonight.
  • Maryland is now 1-0 on the season while wearing black jerseys
