EAST BRUNSWICK, N.J. -- The Terps notched their first win in conference play with a victory over Rutgers 5-2 on Friday.
After dropping the first doubles match, the Terps quickly answered back and tied things up at the No. 2 spot with freshman
Adela Josefova and sophomore
Chloe Hamlin defeating Tess Fisher and Sydney Kaplan 6-3.
The doubles point came down to freshman
Ayana Akli and senior Kate Yemelyanenka taking on Kristina Zahare and Sydney Jones at the No. 1 spot. The Scarlet Knights took an early 4-1 lead over the Terps, but the pair battled back to take a 6-5 lead. Rutgers answered with a point of its own to tie the match 6-6, but Maryland took the next two to win the match 8-6 and the doubles point.
Four Terps notched a win in the singles column. No. 73 Akli finished with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Fisher at the No. 1 spot to stay undefeated on the season in singles play at 9-0. Josefova took her first set, 6-2, over Jones, but the Scarlet Knight tied the score in the second. The pair went to a third set where Josefova took the match, 6-2, 2-6, 6-1, to give Maryland a 3-2 lead over Rutgers.
Junior
Zoe Kulkarni secured the win for the Terps, taking down Kat Muzik, 7-5, 7-5, in straight sets at the No. 5 spot. The day was capped off by junior
Eva Alexandrova defeating Maya Jacobs in three sets at the No. 2 spot, 7-6, 2-6, 6-1, to give Maryland the 5-2 win in its first conference match of the season.
The Terps will be back in action at home with a doubleheader against James Madison and Mary Washington at 11:00 a.m. and 4 p.m. respectively in the JTCC on Saturday, Feb. 22.
