MT. PLEASANT, S.C. -- The University of Maryland baseball team took down Iona, 8-2, on Saturday at The Ballpark at Patriots Point in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina.
What to Know
- Maryland improves to 2-0 for the first time since 2018, when the Terps took the first two of a three-game series at Tennessee from Feb. 16-18.
- Maryland's pitchers continued to be on fire. Freshman right-hander Nick Dean got his first career start and gave the Terps four and two thirds innings of solid work before Ryan Ramsey and Sean Heine finished the job.
- Nick Dean went 4.2 innings on 87 pitches, scattering six hits, allowing just two runs while striking out six and walking two.
- Ryan Ramsey and Sean Heine were dominant out of the bullpen, combining for 4.1 innings, just three hits, no runs, and seven strikeouts. Ramsey earned the win in his collegiate debut.
- Maryland trailed early, allowing Iona to score in the first inning after the Gaels hit a double that was brought in by a RBI single.
- The Terps tied it up in the bottom of the first, scoring its first run of the game on a Maxwell Costes single.
- Iona got ahead again in the second inning, getting one more run across but leaving a pair of runners on.
- Maryland got it going in the third inning, scoring four runs on four hits courtesy of Alleyne, Costes, Benjamin Cowles, and Tommy Gardiner.
- Nick Dean showed some more confidence pitching with a lead, striking out the side in the top of the fourth
- Ryan Ramsey made his collegiate debut in the fifth and got his first strikeout with two runners on and two outs. Ramsey pitched two shutdown innings before Sean Heine came in for relief.
- Maryland plated another run on a throwing error in the sixth, extending its lead to four.
- The Terps scored two more runs in the seventh on an RBI single from Alleyne and a bases-loaded walk drawn by Bednar before leaving the bases loaded.
- Sean Heine got out of a dangerous situation in the eighth, stranding two Iona baserunners and getting out of the inning unscathed.
- Heine allowed two base hits in the top of the ninth but secured the win for Maryland and putting up another clean inning.
Other Stuff
- Freshman Tucker Flint continued to be an on-base machine. After going 3-for-4 in his collegiate debut, head coach Rob Vaughn moved him up in the lineup to hit in the two-hole. Today, Flint showed no issues following Bubba in the lineup, reaching base four times in five plate appearances. Flint also stole a base for the first time in his career.
- Maryland batters keep getting hit by pitches. After getting hit by six last night at Charleston Southern, the Terps were struck five more times on Saturday. That's 11 times in two games. Flint and Bednar have now been hit three times. We'll take it!
- Chris Alleyne has now hit three doubles in two games.
- Bobby Zmarzlak made his collegiate debut at designated hitter, earning an RBI in his first time out in a Maryland jersey.
- Randy Bednar has recorded multiple RBIs in each game this season.
