GymTerps Earn 195.475 in Win over Illinois

College Park, Md. – The No. 19 Maryland gymnastics team earned a 195.475 in its victory over the No. 22 ranked Fighting Illini (193.950). Freshman Emma Silberman earned the all-around title with a career-high 39.150.

"We came up with a slogan at the beginning of the year and it's W.A.R.," said head coach Brett Nelligan. "It means 'We Are Resilient' and they proved that tonight."

Five gymnasts earned or matched career-highs in their respective events including freshmen Reese McClure, Silberman and Aleka Tsiknias, as well as junior Sabriyya Rouse and senior Tiara Wright. 

Maryland honored former gymnast Jessie Black in their annual Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Meet by wearing purple ribbons. 

The afternoon meet started with the Terrapins on vault where senior Alecia Farina matched her season-best 9.700 followed by vault specialist, sophomore Alexsis Rubio (9.850) and anchored by Tsiknias, who notched a 9.775 in her first collegiate vault. Maryland earned a 48.800 team score.

On bars, the GymTerps soared to a 49.125 team-score led by best performances from sophomore Sanya Glauber (9.825) and Farina (9.825). Wright led Maryland in the event with a big 9.850 performance.
 

On beam three gymnasts stood out, starting with Silberman who competed the event for the first time in her collegiate career, notching a solid 9.800. Rouse earned a season-high 9.775 followed by Wright whose beautiful leaps earned her a career-best 9.850. The Terrapins ended the day with a 48.600 on the event leading into the fourth and final rotation. 

The Terps had four career-high performances on floor starting with Silberman earning a 9.825, followed closely behind by McClure who earned a solid 9.850, matching her all-time best. Rouse tore the roof off The XFINITY Center with her energetic routine which earned her a career-high 9.900. Wright anchored the Terrapins putting on a dance clinic to earn a career-best 9.800. Maryland finished the event with a 48.950. 

"I can't say enough about Emma Silberman, from day one she's come in here, proven herself and worked hard. She is just soaring right now," said Nelligan.
