Terps Down Rhode Island, 9-3

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Junior Sean Fisher tossed six and a third innings of one-run ball as the Maryland baseball team downed Rhode Island, 9-3, at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium Friday afternoon.

What to Know
  • On a cold afternoon in College Park, the Terps (4-0) continued their winning ways behind a second straight solid outing from Fisher. The left-hander gave up just a single run over six and a third while striking out four and allowing just five hits and a walk. Fisher moved to 2-0 on the season.
  • The Terps received some help from the Rams (1-3) on their way to nine runs. Rhode Island walked 12 Terps' batters and hit seven more. Maryland capitalized with four runs in the first three games that essentially put the game out of reach.
  • Maryland opened the scoring with a run in the second, brought in after freshman Aaron Perez was walked with the bases loaded to score Maxwell Costes. It was the first RBI of Perez's career as a Terp.
  • The Terps extended the lead in a three-run third inning. Two Rhode Island walks and a hit by pitch set the table for Bobby Zmarzlak, who singled to center for his first hit and RBI of his Maryland career. Benjamin Cowles was then hit by a pitch for force in a run before Tommy Gardiner brought in a run on an RBI groundout.
  • Fisher was steady throughout his day of work, scattering his five hits and giving up his lone run in the fifth. The Terps responded to that Rams run with a run of their own in the bottom half of the fifth, when Cowles scored on an error.
  • Maryland added three more runs in the seventh. Randy Bednar singled in Gardiner before Tucker Flint scored on an error after reaching on a walk, advancing second on Bednar's single and to third on a wild pitch. Bednar reached third on the error that plated Flint before scoring on a wild pitch.
  • Rhode Island grabbed a run in the eighth, but the Terps matched it when Cowles scored on Chris Alleyne's groundout. Cowles had made it to third after walking and stealing second and third.
  • Freshman Sam Bello took over for Fisher in the sixth. He gave up a run in one and two thirds of an inning of work. Sophomore Trevor LaBonte pitched the ninth and allowed a run.
  • Costes reached base five times... without recording an official at bat. The sophomore walked three times and was hit by a pair of pitches. Perez also walked three times. Cowles reached base four times without recording a hit. Junior Justin Vought had a pair of singles and reached base three times.
