Terps Handle George Mason, 13-3

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Behind home runs from Maxwell Costes and Randy Bednar, the Maryland offense exploded for 13 runs in Tuesday's 13-3 win over George Mason. Redshirt junior RHP Zach Thompson gave the Terps a solid start, tossing five innings of one-run ball before letting the bullpen take care of business down the stretch.

What to Know
  • Maryland improves to 6-1 on the season, its best start since 2015.
  • Costes opened the scoring in the second inning, mashing his third home run of the season over the left field wall off starter Nate Young. The reigning Big Ten freshman of the year has been on a tear, launching his third home run in four at-bats.
  • Costes went 3-for-3 on the day with two runs batted in, two walks, and a hit by pitch. The sophomore now leads the team in batting average (.429), slugging (.905), and on-base percentage (.647).
  • Bednar went 3-for-5 with his first home run of the season. The NCBWA preseason All-American drove in three runs and scored three runs. Bednar ranks third in the Big Ten in RBIs on the season with nine.
  • Thompson was excellent in his first start of the season, allowing just one run over five innings. The West River native scattered four hits and struck out two in his season debut.
  • Maryland walked 14 times on the evening and was hit by pitch on four occasions. The Terps lead the NCAA in times hit by pitch (27).
  • The Patriots tied it up with a two-run shot in the sixth off of reliever Trevor LaBonte. Elliot Zoellner replaced LaBonte and pitched two and a third perfect innings.
  • George Mason's pitching woes continued... and were exacerbated once the Patriots started working into their bullpen. Maryland scored five runs throughout the game on HBPs or walks with the bases loaded.
  • Maryland plated two runs in the sixth on bases-loaded walks.
  • In the seventh, Tommy Gardiner scored on a wild pitch before Bednar's blast blew the game open. His home run landed on top of Varsity Team House. For reference, VTH is 400 feet away from home plate.
  • George Mason couldn't find the strike zone in the eighth. As a result, Maryland put up five runs. On just one hit.
  • Mark DiLuia came out for the ninth, his third relief appearance of the season. The junior allowed two hits after striking out the first two batters he faced, but got the last batter of the game to fly out, securing the Maryland win.
