#9 Terps Host #4 Syracuse Saturday

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The No. 9 Maryland women's lacrosse team will host No. 4 Syracuse on Saturday at noon at the Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex.

OPENING DRAW
• Admission for Saturday's top-10 matchup will be free for all fans. Parking in lot 11B is available until 4 p.m. All cars must vacate the lot by that time unless a men's basketball game day permit is displayed. Any cars in lot 11B after 4 p.m. without a men's basketball permit will be ticketed and subjected to be towed.
• Maryland is 1-2 on the season with a 19-6 win over George Mason and losses to No. 1 North Carolina and No. 14 Florida. The Terps are currently ranked No. 9 in the IWLCA Coaches Poll, heading into this weekend's game against No. 4. 
• Kali Hartshorn has led Maryland through two games with 12 points (seven goals and five assists), while also leading the Terps with 24 draw controls. Catie May and Hannah Warther each also have seven goals and five groundballs to help the Terps offense, while Warther also has four caused turnovers.
• The Terps were picked to win the Big Ten for the sixth season in a row. Maryland has never lost a Big Ten regular season game, standing at 28-0 over five years and has eight conference championships (five regular season, three tournament).

WELCOME THE NO. 1 RANKED FRESHMAN CLASS
• Maryland welcomes the top ranked freshman class to College Park for the 2020 season, as named by Inside Lacrosse. Six Terps were ranked in the publication's Top 50 Freshmen rankings, including five of the top 20 and the top ranked attacker and defender. 11 of the 12 Terrapin newcomers are ranked in the top 100.
• Six of the incoming freshmen were Under Armour All-Americans, the most in the country, all of whom were ranked by Inside Lacrosse: No. 4 Shaylan Ahearn, No. 5 Emma Schettig, No. 9 Hannah Leubecker, No. 13 Catherine Flaherty, No. 20 Kate Sites and No. 26 Victoria Hensh.
• Ahearn, May, and Schettig have all immediately jumped into the starting lineup and started in all three contests while Sterling earned the start last week at #1 North Carolina. Leubecker and Sites have also seen time in game action over the first three weeks. 

FOUR TERPS NAMED TO TEWAARATON WATCH LIST
• Four members of the No. 1 Maryland women's lacrosse team, tied for the most in the country, were named to the initial Tewaaraton Watch List, as announced by the Tewaaraton Foundation last week. 
• A trio of seniors: Meghan DohertyBrindi Griffin and Kali Hartshorn, as well as junior Grace Griffin were all selected for the watch list.
• Maryland has won eight of the last 10 Tewaaraton awards, with Megan Taylor becoming the first goalie in lacrosse history to win the award last year. Before that, Zoe Stukenberg took home the prestigious award in 2017, Taylor Cummings won three straight from 2014-16 and Katie Schwarzmann became the first two-time winner for Maryland in 2012-13. Caitlyn McFadden started the eight-for-10 streak for Maryland, garnering the award in 2010. Jen Adams won the inaugural Tewaaraton in 2001. Jen Giles was also a finalist for the award last season. 

2019 RECAP
• The Terps won their 15th national championship in 2019, going 22-1 and winning the Big Ten regular season title for the fifth year in a row. Maryland beat Boston College 12-10 in the title game after pummeling Northwestern, 25-13 in the semifinals.
• Goaltender Megan Taylor racked up a handful of awards after a sensational season, winning the Tewaaraton Award, the Honda Award and being named the IWLCA National Player of the Year.
• Cathy Reese was selected as the IWLCA National Coach of the Year for the fourth time, Julia Braig was named the IWLCA National Defender of the Year and Maryland earned a program best seven All-Americans, led by Taylor, Braig and Jen Giles as first teamers. 

TERPS SELECT 2020 TEAM CAPTAINS
• Maryland has selected seniors Lizzie ColsonMeghan Doherty and Brindi Griffin and junior Grace Griffin as its 2020 team captains. 

SCOUTING THE ORANGE
• No. 4 Syracuse is off to a 4-1 start in this young season, last weekend defeating No. 6 Northwestern 16-11 in Evanston. 
• Last season, the Orange went 16-5 and 5-2 in the ACC, making the NCAA Quarterfinals before falling to Northwestern. 
• Last season, Kali Hartshorn scored the game winner on a free position attempt off an assist from Hannah Warther as Maryland defeated Syracuse 12-11 in overtime. Goale Megan Taylor was incredible in goal, making clutch stop after clutch stop down the stretch with the game tied. Taylor had four saves over the final seven minutes, all with the game tied at 11.
• The Terps are 23-1 all-time against the Orange.
• Maryland has won 12 in a row against the Orange dating back to 2012 including wins in the 2013, 2015 and 2016 National Semifinals and a 15-12 win in the 2014 Natonal Championship. The Terps and Orange have met in every season since 2009. 
• Cathy Reese and Syracuse Head Coach Gary Gait coached together as assistant coaches at Maryland from 1999-01 after Gait coached Reese when she was in school from 1995-98. The two won seven-straight national championships together from 1995-01.
