RICHMOND, Va. -- Junior Anthony DeMaio scored the game-winning goal in double overtime to push the fourth-ranked Maryland Terrapins past Richmond, 14-13, in a thriller Saturday afternoon. Maryland scored seven of the game's final eight goals to clinch the win and move to 2-0 on the season. Richmond drops to 0-1 with the loss.
Logan Wisnauskas led the Terps with seven points on three goals and four assists, while Jared Bernhardt added a hat trick. DeMaio finished with five points total, notching three assists and a first quarter goal in addition to the OT winner. Chris Brandau made 10 saves to earn the decision in net.
Down 12-7 after an extra man goal from the Spiders at the 14:25 in the fourth quarter, Maryland's offense kicked into gear to claw back into the game.
It started with Wisnauskas, who came from behind the cage to convert his second goal of the afternoon to make it 12-8 with 12:39 to go. Sophomore defenseman John Geppert came through with his first career goal in a big moment, taking the ball on his own in transition to score at the 11:19 mark.
Reigning Big Ten Freshman of the Week Jack Brennan delivered back-to-back goals to trim the lead to one, including a man up strike at the 9:33 mark. Richmond would push its lead back to two after a goal from Tate Gallagher with 5:18 to go, before Berhardt quickly answered at 4:18.
Bernhardt would deliver again just a few minutes later, as the senior took a feed from Wisnauskas with space in front of the goal. The pair of All-Americans converted, as Bernhardt buried his third of the day to tie the game with less than two minutes to go.
After a gritty defensive stand, Maryland got one last chance in regulation as Alex Smith took a rip from deep, but his attempt sailed wide.
The first OT period proved to be a wild one, as a flurry of turnovers gave neither team a sense of comfort in the opening minutes. Maryland gained possession and called timeout with 43 seconds to go, but the Spiders held to force a second OT period.
It was there that DeMaio scored the decisive winner, as Wisnauskas found him open breaking towards the left side of the cage. The San Diego, California native gathered and quickly shot with his right hand beating the Richmond keeper as his teammates rushed the field to celebrate.
After an even 4-4 first quarter, Richmond took the upper hand in the second scoring four goals while allowing the Terps just one. Maryland carried an 8-5 deficit into the break, before erasing a five-goal deficit to complete the comeback.
The Terps return to action Saturday, February 15 to host sixth-ranked Penn in College Park.
