LEON, GUANAJUTO, Mexico – Former Terrapin golfer David Kocher ('18) moved to third place on the Korn Ferry Tour points list with his win at the El Bosque Mexico Championship by Innova on March 1. Kocher outlasted Paul Barjon and Chad Ramey on the first playoff hole after posting a four-day total of 12-under 276.
Kocher came from five shots behind the 54-hole leader Mito Pereira, and was in position to gain a spot in a playoff, when his second shot found a penalty area on the par-5 18th hole in the final round. He was forced to drop and take a penalty stroke but was able to get up and down to save his par. His effort on the 72nd hole secured him a spot in the playoff.
Kocher improved on his score from the previous round in two of the last three rounds with scores of 70-69-68-69 and earned $117,000 with the win. It's an important step for Kocher toward finishing this Korn Ferry Tour season in "The 25." This designation represents the top-25 players on the Korn Ferry Tour's points/money list who earn their PGA Tour cards for the following season. Prior to this week, Kocher was in 27th.
David's record at The University of Maryland was also the epitome of consistency. He competed in every event of his career and finished with 25 top-15 performances including two victories as an individual (2015 Firestone Invitational, 2018 Tiger Invitational). Kocher was the first Terrapin golfer to earn four consecutive NCAA Regional bids and was a member of the PING All-Northeast Region Team from 2015 to 2018.
Kocher continues demonstrating an impressive ability to progress throughout his career. His time with the Terps was stellar for himself and the men's golf program as a whole. After graduation, he won in his professional start in the Central Carolina Open on the Coastal Players Tour. His other professional win came on the GProTour, when he shot his lowest competitive round up to that point with an 8-under 62.
Qualifying for PGA Tour China in 2019 was the next step in Kocher's pro career. He achieved success early on PGA Tour China winning the Haikou Championship in April. This helped him to finish in the top five of PGA Tour China-Order of Merit and earned him status on the PGA Tour's Korn Ferry Tour. Now Kocher has won in only his 6th start on the Korn Ferry Tour. This is a huge accomplishment for the 23 year old, and he is one step closer to becoming the next former Terrapin golfer to make it to the PGA Tour.
