#12 Terps Defense Prevails Against Purdue

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- No. 12 Maryland turned up its defensive intensity and stifled Purdue, 83-46, Sunday at the XFINITY Center. The Terrapins (9-1, 5-0 B1G) held the Boilermakers (5-4, 2-3) to just 24 percent shooting on the day, Maryland's best field goal percentage defense since joining the Big Ten.

Ashley Owusu continued her strong sophomore campaign with 19 points and nine assists. Sophomore Diamond Miller added 16 points with eight boards and senior Chloe Bibby added 11 points. Sophomore Faith Masonius grabbed 10 rebounds.

Maryland led the contest wire-to-wire to win its eighth straight game and 22nd straight in Big Ten play, dating back to last Jan. 12.

"I was really proud of the defensive effort, for us to hold a great team like Purdue to 46 points and 24 percent field goal percentage," head coach Brenda Frese said. "I thought we had great intensity, even in the third quarter where we had a little bit of a lapse. I called the timeout and they really responded with that 17-0 run. I loved how we shared the basketball and played today with great energy. This was our third game in six days, so to be able to see the bench come in and give us the lift that we needed to have. Bird, Tai and Zoe really gave us some valuable minutes that we need to continue to have moving forward."

The Terrapins held the Boilermakers to just 2-for-16 shooting from the field and just six points in the first quarter – the Terps' best defense quarter of the season to date.

Maryland kept its defensive pressure up as Purdue continued its shooting woes. The Boilermakers shot just 5-for-17 in the second period and 7-for-33 (21 percent) in the first half. Miller poured in eight points and Bibby added seven as the Terrapins pushed their lead to 43-22 at halftime.

Maryland went on a 17-0 run just after the media timeout in the third quarter. A pullup jumper by Owusu sparked the run and pushed the Terrapins' lead to 35 at 69-34 with 30 seconds left in the period. Benzan hit three three-pointers in the stretch.

The Terrapins owns the series over Purdue, 12-2, and have won 11 of the last 12 matchups.

Maryland will play at Minnesota (2-5, 1-4) Thursday at 6 p.m. ET at the Gophers' Williams Arena. Thursday's matchup will be televised on the Big Ten Network.
