COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Maryland Athletics, in partnership with the University of Maryland Chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), has launched its inaugural toiletry drive to assemble care packages for those who are experiencing homelessness and are in need during the winter months.
The drive aims to collect enough donations to provide 100 care packages to those experiencing homelessness in the Washington D.C. and Prince George's County areas. With unhoused people at a greater risk in the winter months – especially with COVID-19 cases increasing in our area – and eviction rates near all-time highs, it's imperative that our neighbors in need get the help they deserve.
"We're super excited to be a part of such an important effort,"
Jordan Looby, Assistant Athletic Director of Marketing Strategy and Fan Experience, said. "This initiative wouldn't be possible if not for the incredible support of our partnership with the University of Maryland NAACP. Most importantly, we're thrilled to have the opportunity to help improve the lives of so many within our community at a time when it's so badly needed."
Maryland Athletics and the NAACP ask for your help in collecting the necessary toiletries to assemble the care packages.
Items on our Amazon wish list can be purchased here. Alternatively, donations can be made via
Venmo @KatelynFischer14 - Comment Label: UMD Toiletry Drive.
We kindly ask that all donations are made and Amazon orders are purchased before Friday, January 29. Care packages will then be assembled and distributed during the weekend of February 13 to those experiencing homelessness in Prince George's County and Washington, D.C.
For those who wish to collect their own toiletries to send to Maryland Athletics, we ask that toothbrushes, toothpaste, socks, sandwiches, granola bars, water bottles, hand sanitizer, razors, gloves, and blankets be sent to the address below.
