Johnson City, TN - The Maryland men's golf team finished 12th in the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate. After three days of competition, Chris Tanabe was in the top spot for the Terrapins finishing in a three-way tie for 24th (-4) -- (70-70-72).
"We were in fifth place going into the final round," said head coach Jason Rodenhaver. "It's the first time this season that we've been in the hunt. So, I'm encouraged by our results in the first and second rounds. In the end, the nerves got to us. But that's a part of returning to normal. We'll learn from the mistakes we made and get better. This experience will serve us well down the road."
"Tanabe is very consistent, and that comes from experience," said Rodenhaver. "That gives us maturity on the course. Also, he's taken Florian under his wing, which shows his leadership off of the course in the short time he's been at Maryland."
Fast Start, Slow Finish
-Freshman Florian Huerlimann finished in an eight-way tie for 42nd (+1) (71-69-77)
-Senior Dillon Brown finished in a seven-way tie for 55th (+3) -- (71-70-78)
-Senior Will Koras finished in a two-way tie for 72nd (+6) -- )76-69-77)
-Senior Dhaivat Pandya finished in solo 89th (+15) (75-82-74)
Rodenhaver's Take
Huerlimann: "This is Florian's first sub-par round. He was four-under-par (-4) after day two. This tournament was definitely a confidence booster for him."
Brown: "The first two rounds were solid, but he could get anything to drop during the final round."
Looking Forward
"When we get into sticky situations, our brains tell us: 'Press, put your foot down when you hit an off shot.' Teaching our guys to dial it back just a bit will help us stay in contention down the backstretch."
Up Next
The Terrapins return to the links this weekend (Oct. 17-18) for their final stop of the fall semester at the Jake Owen / Quail Valley Collegiate Invitational in Vero Beach, FL, at Quail Valley Golf Club.
-Rodenhaver's Outlook: "We've been playing in this event for the last four to five years. But, surprisingly, Brown is the only one that's seen this track. The Invite has a solid field; it's in Flordia, which is a plus - conditions are great this time of year, so it should add up to good scores."
