COLLEGE PARK, MD - The eighth-ranked Maryland field hockey squad (8-4) will host James Madison (7-4) Sunday at 1 p.m. Admission is free and parking is open in lot 11B, the lot directly to the Complex.

Sunday's game is Griff's Day, a day to celebrate Griff, Kyler Greenwalt's nephew, and his battle against cancer. For more on Griff, click here.

The Maryland field hockey team has adopted the "Goals For Griff" campaign, which is a pledgeable campaign where for each goal a Terp scores this year. Nearly $43 for each goal scored by Maryland this season will be donated to Griff and his family to help pay for his hospital expenses with a goal of reaching $5,000. Click here to donate.

2021-22 STORYLINES

Right here, right now

Maryland came from behind to win at No. 12 Virginia, 2-1, in overtime Thursday. The Cavaliers scored the first goal of the game with just under 6:00 to play. A minute later, Kyler Greenwalt scored the equalizer off a rebounded shot on a penalty corner. Hope Rose scored the game winner with 31 seconds left in overtime.
The Terrapins have a variety of weapons. Thirteen Terps have found the goal cage, led by Bibi Donraadt with seven goals and five assists this season. Hope Rose has six goals.
The Terps are No. 9 in the country and No. 5 in the Big Ten in goals per game (3.18). They are No. 6 in the nation in assists (2.82) and fourth in the conference.
The Terps return 18 letterwinners from their 2020-21 squad, including All-Americans Brooke DeBerdine and Riley Donnelly. The Terps welcome five newcomers - Carly Hynd, Paige Kieft, Kylee Niswonger and US National Team players Julianna Tornetta and Hope Rose.
Senior Riley Donnelly, junior Emma DeBerdine and freshman Hope Rose won bronze with the US Under-21 Team in the Junior Pan American Cup in Santiago, Chile in August. Rose was named MVP of the event.
The Terrapins went 8-7 in the 2020 season (played in the spring of 2021). The Terps closed the regular season with a series sweep of No. 6 Rutgers.

Preseason honors

Fifth-year seniors Brooke DeBerdine and Julianna Tornetta and freshman Hope Rose of the Maryland field hockey squad were named to the Big Ten's Players to Watch List.
All three Terrapins were named to the US National Team roster this summer, along with former Terps Linnea Gonzales, Kelee Lepage and Carrie Hanks.
DeBerdine, who earned NFHCA All-America honors this past spring, was voted team captain for the second straight season. She also earned First Team All-Big Ten honors this past spring.
Tornetta, a graduate transfer from Princeton, and Rose are newcomers to the Terrapins' roster. Tornetta earned NFHCA All-America honors at Princeton in the 2019 and 2018 seasons. She helped the Tigers to back-to-back Final Four appearances and an appearance in the national title game. She tallied 18 goals and 33 assists in her career as a Tiger.
Rose, an incoming freshman from Dauphin, Pa., earned MAX Field Hockey All-America honors. She scored 233 career goals in her high school career.

oh captain, my captain

Fifth-year seniors Brooke DeBerdine and Kyler Greenwalt of the Maryland field hockey squad were voted team captain and vice captain, respectively, by their teammates for the fall 2021 season.
DeBerdine, who earned NFHCA All-America honors this past spring, served as the team's captain for the spring 2021 season.
Greenwalt earned back-to-back Big Ten Sportsmanship Awards in the 2019 and 2020 seasons.

Voted National Coach of the Year an unprecedented nine times, head coach Missy Meharg has exemplified the tradition of excellence Maryland field hockey has become known for, a program with eight National Championships, 18 Final Fours and 26 conference championships - solidifying the Terrapins' position among the top programs in the nation.
Now in her 34th season, Meharg has earned a record of 598-153-9 (.793). She has more wins than any coach at Maryland in any sport.

Maryland is ranked No. 8 in the Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I Coaches poll released Oct. 5. The Terrapins have been ranked in the top 5 in 193 of 235 polls, dating back to 1999 and every NFHCA Coaches poll, dating back to 1999.

The Terps are 145-52-3 (.733) all-time against Big Ten opponents.
Head coach Missy Meharg is 127-32-1 (.797) vs. Big Ten opponents in her 34 years at the helm of the Maryland field hockey program.
Since joining the league in 2014, the Terps are 59-17 in conference play, including their 15 Big Ten Tournament games.
The Terrapins are 52-8 (.867) vs. Big Ten teams at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex.

Maryland owns the series over James Madison, 24-5-3 and has won the last 11 straight meetings, dating back to 1996. Most recently, the Terps beat the Dukes, 4-0, in College Park on Sept. 15, 2019.
