Tagovailoa Sets Completions Record In Loss To No. 8 Michigan

COLLEGE PARK, MD -- No. 8 Michigan handed Maryland a 59-18 defeat on Senior Day Saturday at Capital One Field at Maryland Stadium.

Taulia Tagovailoa set the school record for single-season completions with 287, breaking John Kaleo's record of 286 set in 1992. The junior quarterback finished 19-of-30 for 178 yards along with a passing touchdown, a rushing touchdown, and a 2-point conversion. 

A trio of seniors led the Terps in receiving: Chigoziem Okonkwo (five catches for 36 yards), Carlos Carriere (four catches for 53 yards with a seven-yard touchdown) and Brian Cobbs (four catches for 39 yards). Fellow senior Tayon Fleet-Davis carried 11 times for 71 yards on the ground. 

Senior Joseph Petrino kicked a 31-yard field goal. 

The Terps are now 5-6 overall and 2-6 in the Big Ten and look to become bowl eligible with a victory next week at Rutgers. 

The Wolverines, No. 6 in the latest College Football Playoff rankings, won their 10th game of the season and stand at 10-1 overall and 7-1 in conference. 

Record-Setting Tagovailoa
  • Tagovailoa was 19-for-33 with 178 passing yards with a passing touchdown on Saturday. 
  • His single-season totals stand at 287 completions, 420 attempts, 3,283 passing yards and 21 touchdown passes.
  • With those numbers, he has moved up the Maryland single-season lists:
    • All-time leader in single-season completions with 287, breaking the record previously held by John Kaleo (286 in 1992)
    • Third in single-season passing yards with 3,283, behind only Scott Milanovich (3,499 in 1993) and Kaleo (3,392 in 1992)
    • Third in single-season passing attempts with 420 behind only Kaleo (482 in 1992) and Milanovich (431 in 1993)
    • Third in single-season passing touchdowns with 21 behind on Milanovich (26 in 1993) and Danny O'Brien (22 in 2010)
  • On the career charts, Tagovailoa has 362 completions, 542 attempts, 4,294 passing yards and 28 touchdown passes as he moved up the career charts: 
    • Seventh in career completions with 362. Next on the list at No. 6 is Neil O'Donnell with 387 from 1987-89.
    • Ninth in career passing yards with 4,294. Next on the list at No. 8 is Dan Henning with 4,560 from 1985-87 and No. 7 Neil O'Donnell with 4,989 from 1987-89.
    • Eighth in career touchdown passes with 28. He's tied on the list at No. 8 with Sam Hollenbach (28), Next on the list No. 6 (tie) Perry Hills and Danny O'Brien (29), No. 5 Chris Turner (30). 
  • Tagaovailoa has now thrown a touchdown pass in 14 consecutive games.
Bennett's Break-Ups
  • Jakorian Bennett added to his nation-leading pass breakup total with one against Michigan as he now has 14 this season. 
  • In 10 games played, Bennett has 12 pass breakups and two interceptions, for an average of 1.4 pass breakups per game. 
  • Bennett's 14 pass breakups through 10 games were the most through that span by a Terp since Will Likely had 17 in 2014. 
Notable Numbers
  • The 18 points scored by Maryland are the third-most allowed by Michigan this season. 
  • Freshman Colby McDonald carried for a career-best 68 yards on a career-high 18 carries. 
  • Petrino is now eighth in career points with 207, breaking a tie with Steve Mike-Mayer (1972-74) after scoring four points in the game vs. Michigan. Next on the list is Brian Kopka, who had 218 points from 1997-2000. 
  • Nick Cross had a sack, his second sack of the season and third of his career. 
  • The Terps' 17-play drive on Petrino's 31-yard field goal in the second quarter was a season-high for plays on a drive. The previous high was 16 vs. Howard (9/11/21).
