BOWL BOUND! Terps Top Rutgers, 40-16

PISCATAWAY, NJ -- Maryland will be heading back to a bowl game for the first time since the 2016 season as the Terps beat Rutgers, 40-16, on Saturday at SHI Stadium. The Terps finished the regular season at 6-6 and will learn their bowl destination on Sunday, Dec. 5.

Quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa broke the Maryland single-season passing yardage record in the game, throwing for 312 yards on 21-of-30 with three passing touchdowns and a rushing touchdown. Two of those touchdowns went to Corey Dyches for 25 and 11 yards -- his first-career multi-score game. The other receiving touchdown went to senior Brian Cobbs for 38 yards.

Senior Tayon Fleet-Davis ran for a career-high 152 yards on 18 carries, including 13-yard and 2-yard rushing scores in the fourth quarter to ice the game for the Terps. It was his third-career 100-yard rushing game.

Wide Receiver Rakim Jarrett finished with a team-high seven catches for 111 yards - his third 100-yard game this season.

The Terps scored on their first two drives of the game, to build a 13-0 lead as they continued to hold the lead for the remainder of the game. Maryland led 20-2 at halftime and 26-16 after three quarters.

Maryland's defense was stout throughout the afternoon as it stopped the Scarlet Knights on four different fourth-down conversion attempts. The last coming on a fourth-and-goal from the Terps' 1-yard line with 11 minutes left in the game. The Terps also held Rutgers to 2-of-11 on third-down conversions.

Ruben Hyppolite II and Tarheeb Still led Maryland seven tackles apiece.

From The Coach

"I'm very proud of our team. It's been a long season for us and we very rarely talk about injuries and we don't make excuses. I think all three phases contributed in some form or fashion. It wasn't pretty but it was enough. I'm really proud of the 25 seniors because I understand what they've endured. They've done a great job of leadership and continued to practice to the standard that we set. I'm really happy for those guys. Also, some of the guys that aren't here played a major part in us building this team. This is the end of the '21 season. The bowl opportunity starts our 2022 season which is all about continuing to develop our program. This opportunity gives us a chance to do just that. I'm looking forward to developing our team with this bowl opportunity."

Breaking Down The Action
  • The Terps came out on fire, scoring on their first two drives of the game with touchdown passes from Tagovailoa to Dyches and Cobbs, but Rutgers blocked the second extra-point attempt and returned it, making the score 13-2.
  • The Scarlet Knights started the second quarter on offense, but a blitzing Jordan Mosley forced a bad pass that was tipped by Ruben Hyppolite and intercepted by Jakorian Bennett. The Terps defense remained stout as it would go on to force two turnovers on downs in the quarter. The offense would take advantage as Tagovailoa took a quarterback keeper 10 yards to put Maryland up 20-2 with 4:13 remaining.
  • After a Rutgers touchdown to bring the score to 20-9, Fleet-Davis's 43-yard run set the Terps up with prime field position, with Tagovailoa finishing off the drive with another touchdown pass to Dyches. After another Rutgers touchdown, the Scarlet Knights drove back down the field but another fourth-down stop halted the home team's momentum.
  • Maryland made them pay as Fleet-Davis scored on a 13-yard rushing touchdown to put Maryland up 33-16 with 14:51 remaining in the game. The Terps defense once again came up huge with Mosley and Nick Cross stuffing Rutgers on 4th and goal from the one-yard line, keeping the score at 33-16 with 11:02 remaining. The Maryland offense proceeded to put together a 99-yard drive, capped off by a two-yard touchdown plunge by Fleet-Davis to make the score 40-16 with 6:17 remaining.
