COLLEGE PARK, MD – No. 7 seed Northwestern advanced to the Big Ten tournament semifinals after a dramatic penalty shootout finish against No. 2 seed Maryland.
Ben Bender and
Caden Stafford were the lone Terps to score in the penalty shootouts, and goalie
Niklas Neumann's two saves weren't enough to buoy the Terps to the next round.
Neumann tied a season-high with six saves on the afternoon including a diving one off of a free kick in the first overtime session.
Jacen Russell-Rowe had the best chance of the game for Maryland in regulation as he stepped up to take a penalty shot but it was saved by Northwestern goalie Miha Miskovic. The Wildcat keeper made a total of 10 saves on the afternoon. The Terps (12-3-2, 5-2-2 B1G) were locked in a defensive battle for the entire regulation and overtime periods as both goalies made key saves to keep the game scoreless.
