Maryland Announces 2021 Captains

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland women's lacrosse team has selected Lizzie Colson, Brindi Griffin and Grace Griffin as the team captains for the upcoming 2021 season.
The 2021 team voted on Colson, Griffin and Griffin to be captains for the second straight season, the first time Maryland has had all second-year captains since Nadine Hadnagy and Zoe Stukenberg led the Terps to the 2017 National Championship. All three are Inside Lacrosse Preseason All-Americans and have three-plus years of experience under their belt.
Colson, a two-time IWLCA All-American, returns from a torn ACL to lead the Maryland defense in 2021. The redshirt senior led Maryland with 45 groundballs and stood second in both draw controls (127) and caused turnovers (25) in the 2019 National Championship season and tallied 127 draw controls, the sixth-most ever in a single season by a Terp. In her career, Colson has 244 draw controls, 100 groundballs and 57 caused turnovers. Earlier this winter, she was named the 14th-best player in lacrosse by Inside Lacrosse.
Brindi Griffin chose to come back for her fifth year in 2021 after the NCAA granted all 2020 spring athletes an extra year of eligibility. Griffin led the Terps with 15 goals and stood second with 18 points while picking up six groundballs in 2020. The fifth year attacker finished strong last season, totaling eight goals and one assist in the final two games of the season, en route to Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week honors. Griffin has 97 goals, 54 assists and 151 points in her career thus far and was crucial in Maryland's 2019 National Championship run, scoring nine goals in the Final Four.
Grace Griffin, the 2018 Big Ten Freshman of the Year, enters her senior season as the Terps leader in the midfield. The second year captain enters her senior season with 77 goals, 22 assists. 99 points, 73 groundballs and 35 caused turnovers under her belt. Griffin was second on the team with 17 groundballs and third with eight caused turnovers last season.
The Terps are slated to open up their season on February 21 at Penn State after their first scheduled game at Johns Hopkins was postponed.
