Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Leubecker Leads #10 Terps Past #17 Michigan, 17-13

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Sophomore attacker Hannah Leubecker scored seven goals as the No. 10 Maryland women's lacrosse team broke out offensively to defeat No. 17 Michigan, 17-13.

"It's nice to come away with our first win of the season and get this one under our belt," said head coach Cathy Reese. "Credit to Michigan, they really challenged us all over the field. There's a lot of areas that we got a little better in but we have a lot of room of improvement. As we move forward, we have a quick turnaround to Sunday so we have to reset, refocus, hopefully make some changes and minimize our mistakes a little bit more."

Leubecker's seven goals came on only nine shots as the sophomore scored four in the first half to pace a 10 goal half and three in the second half to help Maryland maintain their advantage. The Terps shot .515 percent in the game led by Leubecker's seven, three from senior Hannah Warther, four points (two goals, two assists) from senior Grace Griffin and two goals apiece from senior Catie May and sophomore Libby May.

Maryland got out to a two goal advantage in the first five minutes of the game before Michigan and Michigan traded three goal runs to put the Terps up 6-4. Leubecker ended the half on fire, scoring the final two goals in the last three minutes to give Maryland a 10-6 halftime advantage.

Leubecker also scored the first two of the second half to put Maryland up 12-7, a lead that never got closer than three the rest of the way.

Sophomore Emily Sterling had a career-high 10 saves to lead the Maryland defense, holding Michigan to just a .382 shooting percentage. Senior Laurie Bracey gave the Terps key minutes, causing three turnovers.

The Terps, now 1-1 on the season, will face No. 17 Michigan again on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. at the Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex. The game will air on BTN Plus.
