COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The eighth-ranked Maryland women's basketball team (18-2, 14-1 B1G) will play at Northwestern (13-5, 11-5) Sunday at 4 p.m. ET. The Terps-Wildcats matchup will be televised on ESPN2.

2020-21 STORYLINES

What's UP
  • No. 8 Maryland used a balanced team effort to push past Purdue, 88-59, Thursday night at Mackey Arena. Five Terrapins scored in double figures as Maryland won its seventh straight game. In her second game back from injury, freshman Angel Reese led the Terrapins with 17 points and 9 boards. Diamond Miller added 16 points. Ashley Owusu poured in 13 points, 5 assists, 6 boards. Mimi Collins added 13 points, 7 in the third quarter and Faith Masonius scored 10 points with 8 boards, 4 assists and 5 steals.
  • The Terrapins have won seven straight games since Jan. 28. In the stretch, they are averaging 95.3 points, 22.3 assists, 52.3 percent from the field and 47 percent from outside the arc.
  • The Terrapins are averaging 93.2 points per game through 20 games, which is leading the country. The NCAA D1 scoring record is 96.7 points per game by Providence in 1991. Maryland's team scoring record was 89.6 points per game by the 1977-78 team. No other team in program history averaged over 90 points per game.
  • As a team, Maryland is leading the nation in three-point field goal percentage (.420), second in assist/turnover ratio (1.62), No. 4 in field goal percentage (.490), No. 5 in free throw percentage (.796), No. 7 in assists (20.2) and eighth in scoring margin (+20.9). Katie Benzan is leading the country in three-point field goal percentage (.534) and Owusu is ninth in assists (120).
  • The Terrapins are on pace to top program records in three-point FG percentage (.403 in 1988-89), FT percentage (.758 in 2014-15) and assists per game (19.8 in 2016-17). Owusu and Miller are on pace to top the record for points averaged by a sophomore in program history (17.8 by Kaila Charles in 2017-18).
  • In the Feb. 15 NCAA Reveal, the Terps were the No. 7 overall seed and a No. 2 seed. The Terrapins have three wins over ranked teams this season - 115-96 over No. 14 Arkansas, 84-80 over No. 19 Indiana and 93-87 over No. 23 Michigan State. Maryland also has 6 Quad-1 wins, 2 Quad-2 wins and its only two losses are Quad-1 losses, both to teams in top 25 of NET & AP rankings.

  • The University of Maryland women's basketball program will celebrate its 50th varsity season in 2020-21, and will honor the program's rich tradition and history throughout the year. Maryland played its first full varsity season in 1971-72, under the leadership of pioneer Dottie McKnight. During its storied history, the program has won 1,047 games, amassed 44 winning seasons, won 22 conference championships, made 37 postseason appearances and captured the 2006 National Championship

  • Head coach Brenda Frese is in her 19th season in College Park. She's led the Terrapins to a record of 504-130 (.795), 12 conference titles, 15 NCAA Tournament appearances in 17 postseasons, three Final Fours, six Elite Eights, six Sweet Sixteens and the 2006 NCAA Championship. 
  • With the Terrapins' win at Nebraska on Feb. 14 Brenda Frese picked up win No. 500 at Maryland, which makes her the winningest coach in Maryland basketball history. Hall of Fame women's basketball head coach Chris Weller won 499 games in her 27 seasons (1975-02).

  • Maryland is one of the most consistent winning programs in the country. The Terrapins have been ranked in 208 straight Associated Press polls, dating back to the preseason poll of the 2010-11 season. That mark is behind just Baylor (333 weeks) and Connecticut (523 weeks).
  •  Maryland has been ranked for 259 weeks in the last 17 seasons, with 200 of those weeks in the AP top 10 and 90 in the AP top 5.

  • Sunday's matchup is the 11th all-time between Maryland and Northwestern, with the Terps owning the series at 9-1.
  • They split their meetings last year. Northwestern won 81-58 in Evanston on Dec. 31. Maryland won 70-61 in College Park on Jan. 26.
