COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The Maryland women's soccer team played to a scoreless draw with No. 17 Rutgers on Saturday afternoon at Ludwig Field.
"I'm very proud of the performance today," head coach
Ray Leone said. "This was a complete effort by every player on the team and they can sleep well tonight. They put everything they had in and then some. I'm excited because we showed what we can be today."
The Terps held Rutgers scoreless on eight Scarlet Knight shots with two saves by goalkeeper
Kennedy Tolson.
Mikayla Dayes had two looks offensively for Maryland.
The Scarlet Knights controlled the early part of proceedings before the Terps started to turn the match a bit in the middle part of the first half. The best chance for the Terps came in the 19th minute.
Alyssa Poarch broke away from a Rutgers defender in the left channel and banged a shot off the crossbar.
The two sides continued to battle in the second half, with both teams finding decent chances to get the breakthrough. Dayes almost won it for the Terps late, but her 88th minute close range effort was saved.
Tolson's big moment came in the first extra time period. A perfect pass into the box gave Rutgers' Amirah Ali space for a point blank opportunity, but Tolson made a fantastic reaction save to save the match. The Terps backline in front of Tolson,
Hope Lewandoski,
Anna Carazza,
Emily McNesby and
Olivia Hicks put together a great collective performance against a potent Rutgers attack.
Maryland will be back in action next Thursday, March 18 at 3:00 p.m. as the Terps host Michigan.
