Colson Named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week

ROSEMONT, Ill. -- Redshirt senior Lizzie Colson was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week after tallying three caused turnovers, five groundballs and six draw controls to lead the No. 8 Maryland women's lacrosse team to a win at Johns Hopkins last week.

Colson was all over the field in the win, tying her career-high with five groundballs and leading the game with three caused turnovers, her third game this year with at least three caused turnovers. The leader of the Maryland defense, Colson's six draw controls tied Karri Ellen-Johnson for third all-time in program history (254) and made Colson only the fourth Terp ever to record 250 career draw controls.

The redshirt senior helped hold Hopkins to only eight goals and shoot just .363 percent, while making numerous stops to prevent the go-ahead goal late in regulation and overtime, preventing the Blue Jays from scoring on five straight possessions to end the game.

Through four games this year, Colson is averaging three caused turnovers a game, good for third in the country and first in the Big Ten. The team captain has at least two caused turnovers in every game.

This is Colson's fifth career Big Ten Defensive of the Week honor, with the previous four all coming in her sophomore 2018 season. Colson is the second Terp to win a Big Ten weekly honor this season, after Hannah Leubecker earned Offensive Player of the Week honors on March 2.

Colson and the Terps will be back in action at home this weekend as Maryland welcomes Ohio State to The Plex for two games on Thursday, March 18 at 4:00 p.m. and Saturday, March 20 at noon.
