COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The 10th-ranked Maryland field hockey team shut out Indiana, 5-0, in the Terrapins' home opener at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex Friday evening.
"Our energy, our dominance, you could tell the opportunity to be back on this field after 17 months," head coach Missy Meharg said. "The brand that Maryland plays, I'm very proud of the women. I also think that Indiana is much improved. They really put us under some fire in the beginning and held us at bay for a long time. A 1-0 game in field hockey is nothing, so to get that string going was contagious and it felt really good."
Sophomore Maura Verleg opened the scoring when she scored with a sweep shot off a penalty corner 12:40 into the match. Maryland (4-3, 3-2 B1G) led 1-0 at the end of the first quarter.
The Terrapins added three more goals in the final 4:11 of the second quarter. Junior Bibi Donraadt buried a shot off a penalty corner to start the scoring spree. She inserted on the play and after a shot was Riley Donnelly was saved, Donraadt buried the chance off the rebound.
Just 1:35 later, senior Kyler Greenwalt swatted in a bouncing ball, again off a rebound, to make it a three-goal lead with 3:36 left in the quarter.
With five seconds left in the period, the Terrapins were awarded a penalty stroke, which Donnelly buried to make it a 4-0 lead at half.
Freshman Anna Castaldo scored her first career goal as a Terrapin when she scored Maryland's fifth goal. She brought the ball in from the left side and tucked in a shot on the near post.
Maryland outshot Indiana, 17 to five and had eight penalty corners to the Hoosiers' two.
Senior goalkeeper Noelle Frost made three saves. Redshirt freshman Christina Calandra made her first appearance in goal.
Next, Maryland will host Indiana (0-8, 0-6) for another matchup Sunday at 11 a.m. at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. The Terps-Hoosiers matchup will be streamed on BTN Plus.
