COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The 10th-ranked Maryland field hockey team picked up its third straight win with a 3-1 victory over Indiana Sunday afternoon at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. With the win, the Terrapins (5-3, 3-2 B1G) swept the weekend series with the Hoosiers (0-9, 0-6).
"When you play a team twice like this, it's a question of if they're going to come out with the same strategy and tactics and they actually did," head coach Missy Meharg said. "They did it a lot better than they did Friday night and and we didn't respond well. Our first two quarters were choppy. Our receiving, our ball speed was super slow, so we played into their hands. But I'm very, very pleased with the women. After halftime, they made the adjustment on ball speed and made better decisions with their individual defense. The women found a way to win the match and really proud of Riley for finding the net twice."
Junior Riley Donnelly put the Terps on the board when she scored off a penalty corner in the 22nd minute. Junior Bibi Donraadt and sophomore Maura Verleg assisted on the play.
Just over four minutes later, the Hoosiers tied the match when Mary Kate Kesler buried a shot off a penalty corner with 4:04 left in the first half. The teams stayed tied at halftime.
Junior Taylor Mason broke the tie when she scored off a reverse shot into the bottom of the cage with 3:41 left in the third quarter. Mason brought the ball into the circle, then cracked the shot just inside the near post.
Just over a minute later, Donnelly added her second of the match when she scored off another penalty corner. Maryland led 3-1 at the end of the third quarter.
The Terrapins took 14 shots to the Hoosiers' four and had nine penalty corners to one for Indiana.
Senior goalkeeper Noelle Frost made two saves.
Next, Maryland will head to Iowa (6-1, 4-1) for two games the first weekend in April. The Terps and the Hawkeyes will play at 5:30 p.m. ET on Friday, April 2. That matchup will be televised on the Big Ten Network. They will play again at 12:30 p.m. ET on April 4.
