IOWA CITY, Iowa – The 13th-ranked Maryland field hockey team shut out No. 2 Iowa, 1-0, Friday afternoon in a defensive duel at Grant Field. With the win, the Terrapins (6-3, 4-2 B1G) won their fourth straight match.
Maryland held Iowa (9-2, 5-2) to just one penalty corner in the game. The Hawkeyes took 10 shots to the Terps' five. Senior goalkeeper Noelle Frost made five saves to lead the defensive effort.
The Hawkeyes took six shots in the second quarter and four in the third as they threatened to score. Frost made three of her saves in the second and two in the third.
"Iowa is a super strong team," head coach Missy Meharg said. "This is a tough place to compete. Just so proud of the women. They've been playing better and better. It was nice to have a bye weekend.
"I was so impressed that we only gave up one penalty corner. Noelle [Frost\ really kept us in the game early and I thought Riley Donnelly's patience and maturity in the final quarter was outstanding."
Sophomore Maura Verleg scored the game's lone goal when she capitalized off a penalty corner with 5:51 left in the third quarter.
Next, the Terps and the Hawkeyes will play again Sunday at 12:30 p.m. ET. Sunday's matchup will be on BTN Plus and live stats will be available here.
